Apameia (BC 133-48) AE 18 229 viewsca 88-40 BC. AE18 (4.53g, 12h). Attalos Bianoros, eglogistes. Turreted head of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder / Marsyas walking right on maeander pattern, playing aulos (double flute). Near EF, green patina.
hierapolis_phrygia_BMC95var.jpg
Hierapolis (Auton. AD 100-300) AE 24236 viewsQuasi-autonomous, 2nd century AD. AE24 (7.34g). ΛAIP - BHNOC, draped and radiate bust of Apollo Lairbenos right / IEPAΠOΛEITΩN/NEΩKOPΩ/N, she-wolf standing left, suckling the twins Remus and Romulus; star above. About VF, dark green patina. Hoeft coll.

Lairbenos is a pre-Greek name of Apollo from Asia Minor. Some put it to 'labrys' = double axe, others to Hetitian 'labarnas' = master. But more possibly it is a toponymikon or ethnikon. There are several sanctuaries of Lairbenos in Phrygia with numerous votive inscriptions especially in Dionysopolis and Motela.

Laodikeia (AD 198-217) AE 30 - Caracalla80 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE30 (11.97g, 6h). Struck mid-August 215 AD-mid-August 216 AD. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / ΛAOΔIKЄΩN NЄΩKOPΩN ΔOΓΜΑΤΙ CYNΚ, ΛHT above temples, OY below, two distyle temples, set on high podiums and seen in perspective, vis-à-vis. Good VF, earthen black-green patina.

The Greek dogmati synkletou is a translation of the Latin senatus consulto, which itself indicates a decree of the Roman Senate. In this instance, it refers to the renewal of Laodicea’s neocorate status, which occurred during Caracalla’s visit there while making his way east to fight the Parthians.
3430335.jpg

Kibyra (BC 166-84) AE 130 views2nd-1st century BC. AE13 (1.86g). Helmeted head of Athena right / KI, eagle standing right on thunderbolt. aVF.Jan 22, 2017

The attribution to Augustus is very tenuous. The head is clearly a portrait, but does not resemble any of the other Augustus portraits from the area.

The reverse legend makes this a very interesting coin. It is best translated to: "[Coin] of the Laodiceans. By decree of the [Roman] Senate holder of a Neocorate." The Neocorate was a honorary title granted to cities that had established a cult for a Roman emperor. It is as such very common, but to our knowledge Laodikeia is the only mint to explicitly mention the Senate decree on its coins that preceded the honorary title. The Polis consequently rewarded the honor by chosing Roma as a reverse type.
