Ionian League (AD 139-161) AE 36 - Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar, 139-161 AD. AE36 - Medallion (41.94g, 12h). Gillespie Type I. Marcus Claudius Fronto, asiarch and high priest of the Thirteen Cities. Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Tyche Soterios (Fortuna Redux) standing left. Near EF, blue-black patina with some bare metal showing through, minor smoothing in fields, obverse details slightly strengthened. One of two examples known to Gillespie, and the only one in private hands. Group CEM; ex Gillespie Coll., MÃ¼nzhandlung Basel 10 (3/1938), lot 438; MÃ¼nzhandlung Basel 3, (3/1935), lot 1012.
