On almost all other examples that have come to auction, or appear in standard references, the wing of the Pegasos is not on the flan, giving the appearance of simply the head of a horse.

The exact nature of this design is not known, but it has the strong appearance of an animal's shoulder and leg, the hair on the lower part of the leg being highly evident on this example.
100014825B15D.jpg
Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) leg - EL 1/24290 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Myshemihekte – Twenty-Fourth Stater (6mm, 0.66g). Uncertain design (chicken wing, rabbit leg, or human leg?) / Incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. Good VF. Extremely rare.

The device on the obverse bears a strong resemblance to the obols attributed to Phlious in Phliasia (cf. BCD Peloponnesos 78–80), as does the reverse punch – a case of imitating types?
710950.jpg
Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion - EL 1/21761 viewsca 600 BC. EL Hemistater (8.35g). Phokaian standard. Figural type. Head of roaring lion right / Irregular incuse. Good VF. Unique.

While this coin appears to belong to Wiedauer's Series XLIII (lion head), the style of both the lion and the incuse are somewhat different. In particular, the incuses on the Wiedauer coins are shallower and have rough irregular patterns in relief. The incuse on the present coin is much deeper and has a smooth surface that flows to varying depths. Although these differences suggest this coin belongs to another series or issue, it is also possible, because there are no published hemistaters of this type, that this coin represents the norm for this particular denomination.

A few very rare issues of electrum have a lion forepart on a horizontally-striated field (cf. CNG 69, lots 444 and 447), but this is apparently the first appearance of lion’s head on a vertically-striated field.

Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion 4 - EL 1/12435 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Hemihekte – Twelfth Stater (8mm, 1.19g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Figural type. Head of lion right / Incuse square. VF. Very rare.

The style of the obverse of this type has a resemblance to similar hemihektes of Miletos (cf. SNG Kayhan 444–8), but the attribution of those pieces is based on their incuses, all of which have geometric shapes or pellets similar to the staters that are conclusively proven to have been from Miletos (cf. SNG Kayhan 440–1). Further study, however, may eventually prove the attribution of these plain-incuse issues to Miletos as well.

Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion 4 - EL 1/24574 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL 1/24 Stater (7mm, 0.59g). Milesian standard. Figural type. Head of roaring lion left / Incuse square. Good VF. Apparently unpublished denomination.

The cataloger of the Elektron collection associated its coins of this type to Rosen 304, but the style of the lion and the incuse punch are not consistent with these.

Ionia Uncertain (BC 625-550) Figural - EL Stater2635 viewsca 650-600 BC. EL Stater (14.22g). Milesian standard. Figural type. Sphinx seated left on ground line; cross with terminal pellets to left / Irregular incuse. Unpublished. Good VF. Unique. This previously unknown type almost certainly has an Ionian origin, but the specific mint remains unknown. The sphinx appears as a civic emblem on archaic coins of both Chios and Samothrace, but Samothrace did not issue electrum, and the electrum staters of Chios, although struck on the same weight standard as the present coin, are of a distinctly different style (cf. Baldwin, Chios, pl. I, 1-12). The cross with terminal pellets -- perhaps a solar symbol is exceptional by its appearance here as a subsidiary symbol. Such subsidiary symbols are rare on early electrum (but cf. Triton VIII, lots 399-405, for the use of a pentagram or a triad of pellets as symbols on the early electrum of Ephesos). The cross with terminal pellets does appear on other uncertain early electrum (cf. Traite I 7, pl. I, 6) and is employed regularly as a reverse type on the electrum of Miletos (with a central pellet in addition to the terminal pellets; cf. SNG Kayhan 440-449).
