Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B90

ca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.57g, 12h, 9mm). Wreathed head of young Dionysos right / Facing large bald head of satyr with small ‘ears’ and close cropped beard and moustache, all within linear square. Good VF. Carr coll.

There are seven general reverse varieties/types for Bodenstedt 90. This is the first known from an auction of what we can call "type 7."

Different reverse types:
Type 1: facing bald head of satyr (common type – 62 known*; #B30. Bodenstedt makes further distinction on basis of the size and style of the beard - see CNG 70, lot 229)
Type 2: facing bald head of satyr, star top right in field (2 known; #B2 – see CNG 94, lot 497);
Type 3: facing bald head of satyr, star top left in field (5 known; #B2 – see Gemini IX, lot 119);
Type 4: facing hairy large head of satyr (14 known; #B3 – see Bru 3, lot 46);
Type 5: facing hairy large head of satyr, bunch of grapes in lower left field (4 known; #B5 - see CNG 75, lot 357);
Type 6: facing hairy large head of satyr, ivy leaf or letter(?) to right in field (1 known; #B2 – see NY Sale XVII, lot 78);
Type 7: As per file description above (1 known, this coin; #B2).
* Number “known” are those from auctions. #B are the additional number recorded in Bodenstedt.
