The next coin in the Greenwell listing notes a type where much of the detail of this slaying is depicted – see Coin ID #14069.

The ‘Perseus’ emissions are known for denominations of stater through 1/96th. Most examples do not capture the whole ‘scene’ - commonly either the head of Perseus or Medusa being off the flan. This coin is possibly the second best published example capturing the major features [For an example that is even sharper in its detail, see Gemini IX (1/2012) lot 105].

Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater529 viewsca 550-500 BC. EL Hekte (2.66g, 12mm). Winged male mythological creature (Phobos or Daimon) with human body, lion head, griffin’s ears and wings, running/kneeling left, head turned right, holding tunny by tail in left hand / Quadripartite incuse square. NGC graded Choice XF, strike 5/5, surface 4/5, nicely centered, struck from artistic dies. An excellent example of archaic representation of local deity from Asia Minor. Carr coll.

A remarkable mythological type usually known from the stater with the same design. At times identified as Phobos, the personification of terror, the figure may also be the Mithraic divinity Areimanios (Ahriman) as argued by Bivar, "Mithra and Mesopotamia," Mithraic Studies (Manchester, 1975), pp. 275-89.

Known type for a stater (at least 10 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9333 and #6817), hekte (1/6th Stater) (at least 12 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9330 and #9332), hemihekte (1/12th Stater) (at least 9 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9329) and Myshemihekte (1/24th Stater) (at least 6 sold at auction, see Coin ID #11022). In some instances, it appears that the die for the stater was used on hekte and, as such, the tuna is off the flan. This example is from an unknown die. In some cases, Attis is wearing a conspicuously jeweled Phyrgian cap (see Coin ID #9332) and in others, the jewels are less conspicuous or absent.

This issue is not only unusual for the placement of the tunny on the left of the facing head, but also for the shape of the ear on the feline. Typically, the ear is depicted, on all denominations of von Fritze 43, with pointed ears, where here they are rounded. Although this is likely the result of the liberty of the engraver, one wonders whether this might be an attempt to depict a totally different animal, such as a bear.

Chron., N.S., xvi, p. 282), suggests that this figure may be one of the Argonauts, and the attribution is not improbable, the mythical history of Cyzicus being closely connected with their expedition.” Coin ID #13239 and #13744 of Kyzicus also reflect a connection with the Argonauts.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of a similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also to be found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – see, on this website, Coin ID #11257; see also Coin ID #12346).

Head in his 1887 tome, “Historia Nummorum” (figure 271) was an early reference to this type.
