Uncertain Satrap (BC 4th cent) Satrap - Obol579 views4th century BC. AR Obol (0.79g, 10mm, 8h). Draped bust, wearing satrapal headdress, facing slightly left; star to left / Crowned and draped female bust left. EF, toned, obverse struck off center. Very rare.

The proposed attribution of this type to Evagoras II, originally made in the 19th century, is likely incorrect (cf. SNG Kayhan 1066 for a similar obol historically attributed to Evagoras). Interestingly, although Gökturk 88 retains the attribution to Evagoras II, Gökturk 52, another obol certainly related to this type, is placed at an uncertain mint in Cilicia.

Soloi (BC 333-323) Stater627 viewsBalakros, Satrap, 333-323 BC. AR Stater (10.96g, 25mm, 2h). Baaltars seated left, holding lotus-tipped scepter; grain ear and grape bunch to left; B to right, Σ (engraved over M) below throne / Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. Near EF, some porosity.

This interesting series of Balakros has been traditionally assigned to various Cilician mints based on the appearance of the letter below the throne. More recent research, as yet unpublished, suggests that all of these coins were actually struck at a central mint, most likely Tarsos. Close similarity of style of many coins assigned to different mints strongly supports this hypothesis (see, e.g., SNG France 197 and 410). The present coin provides even more compelling evidence for this conclusion, as the Σ below the throne is clearly engraved over an M (SNG France 197 is the same die, but the M has deteriorated in the die to the point of not being clear). Of course, an argument could be made that a die was transferred from Mallos, but it seems unlikely for such a prolific mint as Soloi.

Good VF, brown patina, minor roughness. From Group CEM.

The reverse of this coin recalls the second major conflict of Zeus’ rise to power. After he had defeated the Titans in the Titantomachy and apportioned their former relatives to his fellow Olympians, he was compelled to resolve a conflict with the Giants, offspring of Gaia and Cronus. Known as the Gigantomachy, these chthonic half-man, half-serpent creatures attempted to wrestle power from the Olympians by casting them out of Olympus. To accomplish this, the Giants attempted to reach Olympus by heaping up one mountain range on top of the other. From above, Zeus and the other Olympians defended themselves by hurling their weapons. In the end, however, it was the assistance of Hercules, that won the day. With the final defeat of the Giants, the rule of Zeus was no longer challenged.

EF, dark brown patina, minor roughness.

The Greek word δωρεά (gift) indicates that the bridge was the result of imperial munificence. It is quite possible that, as the city was situated on a major route eastward into Commagene and Cyrrhestica, and consequently the Persian frontier, the bridge was constructed to ensure rapid deployment of Roman troops to the East.

Laertes (AD 198-217) AE 28 - Caracalla269 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE28 (10.50g, 7h). AVT KAI M AVP ANTωNЄI[NOC], laureate and draped bust right / ΛAЄPTЄ ITωN, Apollo standing facing, head right, holding palm frond and bow. Good VF, dark green patina, adjustment marks. Very rare. From Group CEM. Ex Aufhäuser 5 (10/1988), lot 364; Münz Zentrum 63 (4/1988), lot 1363.

The identification of the emperor is uncertain. Originally published in the Münz Zentrum sale as Caracalla, the cataloguer of the Aufhäuser sale gave it to Elagabalus. Either is a possibility, but this cataloguer leans slightly toward identifying the bust as a young Caracalla. While no coins of either emperor appear in the standard references, an issue under Septimius Severus is evidenced by extremely rare coins of Geta as Caesar (SNG Pfalzer 873), which appear to be half denominations of the current piece. Surely Laertes did not issue in the name of the Caesar alone, and coins of Severus and Domna will likely turn up in the course of time.

Anazarbos (BC 15-AD 19) AE 31 - Germanicus836 viewsGermanicus, Caesar, 15 BC-19 AD. AE31 - Diassarion (17.72g, 12h). Dated CY 67 (48/9 AD). Bare head right / Laureate head of Zeus Olybris right before mountain with acropolis; ETOYΣ ZΞ (date) in exergue. Near EF, dark green patina, minor adjustment marks on reverse. A great portrait and highly interesting reverse type. Group CEM.

RPC gives three possible identifications for the figure on the obverse: Claudius, Britannicus, and Germanicus. Britannicus is the most easily dismissable attribution; as RPC notes (p. 595) the nomenclature would be unlikely for such a date. Levante and Ziegler describe the figure as Claudius (the latter with a question mark), but the varying portrait style and the obverse legend “TIBERIOC KΛAΔIOC KAICAP” on a parellel issue of the same year casts serious doubt. Germanicus then seems the most likely.
