Seleukeia (AD 238-244) AE 30 - Gordian III53 viewsGordian III, 238-244 AD. AE30 (13.53g, 6h). Radiate and draped bust right; countermark: ΔO monogram within triangular incuse and K / Infant Zeus seated facing on throne, head left, raising right hand; around him, three Curetes, each wearing military outfit, striking shields with swords. VF, earthen green patina. A rare reverse type for this city and emperor.

The Curetes share some of the attributes of the Corybantes, dancing divinities associated with the worship of Cybele, but their specific role in Greek mythology was to serve as the protectors of the infant Zeus while he was hidden away on Crete, safe from his murderous father Cronus. Their militant dancing, accompanied by the clashing of swords on shields, drowned out the cries of the infant. The Curetes’ dance was later re-enacted by young men at Greek festivals and games.

Tarsos (AD 198-217) AE 33 - Caracalla30 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE33 (20.54g, 12h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Artemis kneeling to right over deer, raising its head with her left hand, right hand poised to plunge dagger into its throat. Very Fine.

Here we see a more familiar depiction of Artemis than that of the Ephesian manifestation (see lot 867). The reverse type depicts Artemis as the goddess of the hunt, about to slay a deer. Homer applies the epithet 'Ποτνια Θηρων' (Mistress of the Animals) to the goddess, and deer in particular were considered sacred to her. In addition to female fertility and virginity, Artemis was associated with certain male activities - in particular the transition from boyhood to manhood and warfare. Perhaps it is these latter associations Caracalla wished to conjure in Tarsos, the city from which he launched his Parthian campaign in AD 216.

Alexandria ad Issum was founded by Alexander in 333 BC, about 35 km south of the Issos battlefield, to guard the Syrian gates (a mountain pass connecting the cilician coast with inland Syria) while he was advancing to Egypt. The small city issued few coins, some under Antiochos IV and some in imperial times, all of which are rare today.
