Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #2024

Rhodes (BC 88) AE 30

ca 88 BC. AE30 (17.59g, 11h). Radiate head of Helios right / Rose; headdress of Isis to left, thunderbolt to right. VF, attractive dark green patina with earthen highlights, slight roughness on reverse. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection.

This coinage was struck during Mithradates VI's failed six-month siege of Rhodes in 88 BC. Unable to produce enough silver for military expenditures, the Rhodians resorted to a fiduciary bronze coinage.
