|
Hadrian, 117-138 AD. AE (once plated) Tetradrachm (6.85g, 1h). Countermarked under Caracalla, 215-217 AD. Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / ΤΑΡCΕΩΠΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΛΕΩC, lion bringing down bull to left; c/m: laureate head of Caracalla right, A-M-K around bottom of bust; all within incuse oval. Very rare, very fine, about 20 % cut off. The countermark exposed the coin as being plated, the coin fooled people for about 100 years in between being struck and countermarked!
