Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #3935

Tarsos (BC 379-374) Stater - Pharnabazos

Pharnabazos, Persian military commander, ca 379-374 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 10.50g). Three-quarter facing head of Herakles, head turned slightly right, wearing lion's skin, Aramaic 'HLK' (=Cilicia) below / Helmeted head of warrior left. VF, toned, obverse die rust, rough surfaces. Very rare. David Herman Coll.; ex CNG 66 (5/2004), lot 605; Eduardo Levante Collection, 75.

Unlike the other issues of Pharnabazos, which feature a bearded head of Ares, this coin clearly shows a clean-shaven, young male head.
