Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater

550-450 BC. EL Hekte (2.62g, 11mm). Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet, base of crest decorated with zig-zag and pellet pattern; tunny fish left below / Quadripartite incuse square. About EF. Carr coll.

This coin is an example of hekte of a type known as a stater – see Coin ID #14563. In addition, examples are known for fractions of 1/12 and 1/24 stater with the hektes being the more abundant example of which at least 20 are known. Head in his 1887 tome, “Historia Nummorum” (figure 271) was an early reference to this type.
