Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #9580

Ephesos (AD 117-138) AE 37 - Hadrian

Hadrian, 117-138 AD. AE37 (24.30g, 6h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. Good Fine, dark greenish-brown patina, cleaning scratches. Slight traces of silvering on the reverse. Ex R. D. Frederick Coll.

The light silvering on this specimen and a specimen that appeared in Stack’s (1/2010, lot 267), suggests that this was perhaps a medallic or commemorative issue, possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos in 129 AD.
