Ephesos (AD 0-100) AE 21497 views1st century AD. AE21 - Tesserae (5.87g). Stag kneeling left, head reverted / Bee. VF, dark green patina, mounted in a contemporary silver bezel which has been broken, most likely where a loop had been for suspension. A long series of tesserae, or tokens, was produced at the cult center of Ephesos during the Hellenistic period and later. The legends generally cannot be translated, and are probably for the most part meaningless mystical formulae.

ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟC ΚΑ-ICΑΡ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟC, laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. Near VF, dark green surfaces, minor roughness.

The emperor Hadrian was granted many honorific titles by the Greeks, including "Savior," "Founder," "New Dionysus," "New Heracles," "Panhellenius," and "Savior of the World," but the epithet "Olympius" is perhaps the most presumptuous. During Hadrian’s visits to Athens early in AD 129, he visited the massive Temple of Zeus Olympius (also known as the Olympeion). The Historia Augusta reports that at this time Hadrian dedicated an altar to himself, by virtue of which he seems to have elected himself a god and to have invested himself with the powers of the Olympian Zeus. This issue was possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos later the same year.

Ephesos (AD 117-138) AE 37 - Hadrian98 viewsHadrian, 117-138 AD. AE37 (24.30g, 6h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. Good Fine, dark greenish-brown patina, cleaning scratches. Slight traces of silvering on the reverse. Ex R. D. Frederick Coll.

The light silvering on this specimen and a specimen that appeared in Stack’s (1/2010, lot 267), suggests that this was perhaps a medallic or commemorative issue, possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos in 129 AD.

The sister of Apollo, Artemis was the virgin huntress worshipped by a cult at Ephesos. This was a wealthy following and her temple in the city was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Destroyed and rebuilt three times before its final destruction, the last incarnation survived into the reign of Gallienus before it was sacked by raiding Goths. The image of the goddess worshipped at Ephesos was distinctly archaic; she was depicted with many breasts, supposedly (and perhaps, incongruously) denoting her fertility. This attribute, along with the usual mural crown denoting the protection of the city walls and the stags which were sacred only to Artemis, can be seen on the reverse type.
