Lampsakos (BC 394-330) AV Stater - Artabazos3280 viewsArtabazos, Satrap of Daskylion, ca 356 BC. AV Stater (8.46g, 3h). Head of Artabazos left, wearing a Persian tiara tied with a diadem / Forepart of Pegasos right in shallow incuse. Good VF, a few light scratches. Extremely rare, only six examples recorded, four of which are in museum collections.
Traditionally, this stater has been assigned to the satrap Orontes, based on the similarity of its reverse to silver and bronze coins believed to have been struck by him at Lampsakos. Although Orontes did control portions of Mysia, he was in fact subordinate to his kinsman Artabazos who was the true satrap of the entire region of Daskylion, which encompassed Lampsakos at the time this coin was struck. When both Orontes and Artabazos rebelled against the Persian king Artaxerxes III in 357 BC, Artabazos secured Lampsakos through the agency of the hired Athenian mercenary, Chares. When Chares accomplished his mission, Artabazos richly rewarded him in coin, the likely occasion for striking this issue. (5 votes)

Cyprus Uncertain (BC 450) Stater1120 viewsca 450 BC. AR Stater (10.52g). Cow right suckling calf, eagle flying right, "ankh" in right field topped with owl's head / Bull standing right, plow above, owl's head below. Good VF. Extremely rare; one of only three known coins. Ex Geissener Muenzhandlung 44 (4/1989), lot 463.
The examples of this coin are known: this piece, the Paris specimen, and one in a private collection (from Leu 50, lot 216). There is another coin in Paris from the Seyrig Collection which is stuck from the same dies, but in an earlier state, before the dies were recut to add the owl heads. Originally attributed to a Phoenician mint and later an uncertain Cilician mint, M. Amandry has since convincingly argued that the style does not fit the Sidonian origin and directs one to another coin (see Sternberg XVII, 180) possibly from the same obverse die, but with heavier recutting, that has a more Cypriote-appearing reverse. Mytilene (AD 198-217) AE 43 - Caracalla1810 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE43 Medallion (55.52g, 6h), Pub. Julius Leontius, magistrate. AVTO KAI MAP AYPH ANTONEINOC, young laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / EPI CTPA PO IOVLIOV LEONTEW, MVTILHNAI/WN in two lines in exergue, Caracalla, holding sceptre in left hand, standing in chariot drawn by four horses to left, preceded by a Roman soldier; trophy and two captives on a pedestal in the background. Good VF, brown surfaces, fields smoothed and some tooling, most noticeable around the legends. Very rare. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex Triton II (12/1998), lot 632.
This medallion present a traditional view of the staging of the adventus, the ceremony honoring the emperor as he enters a host city. Caracalla is in the imperial chariot, proceded by the herald announcing his arrival. The captives and the trophy could be either a premonition of the expected victory over the Persians, or could represent the skirmishes with the border tribes that occupied the army as he passed through Thrace. Tarsos (BC 425-400) Stater - Syennesis III915 viewsca 425-400 BC. AR Stater (10.46g). Satrap on horseback galloping right / Naked hoplite kneeling left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, holding spear in right hand, large round shield decorated with gorgoneion in left, 'TRZ' in Aramaic to right. Toned VF, light porosity.
The hereditary kings of Cilicia were invested with the name Syennesis, a royal title more than an actual name. Syennesis III was probably the grandson of Syennesis II, one of the commanders in the fleet of Xerxes, and married a woman named Epyaxa. In 401 BC, the couple supported the revolt of Cyrus II against his brother Artaxerxes II. In return for the assistance, including a body of troops commanded by his son which he offered to Cyrus, Syennesis was himself richly rewarded with gifts and honors. At the same time, though, he sent his other son to Artaxerxes, so that whatever the outcome he might be with the winning side. Syennesis' actions, however, did little to save Cilicia's independence; after 400 BC, it became a satrapy of the Persian Empire. (9 votes)
