Kyzikos (BC 334) EL Stater5178 viewsca 334 BC. EL Stater (16.02g, 12h). Eleutheria seated left on rock, holding wreath in right hand; tunny below, ΕΛΕΥ-ΘΕΡΙ in two lines on rock / Quadripartite incuse square. Good VF, toned. Extremely rare. Fielder Coll.
This specimen bears an inscription, 'Eleutheria" (Freedom), that makes clear the intent of the type: to celebrate a liberation. Several different victories have been suggested, but the presence of a coin of this type in the Prinkipo Hoard, buried circa 334 BC, in conjunction with gold staters of Philip II, clearly suggests that the victory in question is Alexander's first defeat of the Persians at the river Granikos in 334 BC. The Granikos was located just to the south and west of Kyzikos, and Alexander's victory liberated Kyzikos from Persian control. Thus, not only is this a very rare stater from Kyzikos, it also represents the first coin struck as a direct result of Alexander's campaign to conquer the world, predating even Alexander's own coinage.

(BC 282-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm3268 viewsPhiletairos I, 282-263 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.85g). Diademed head of Philetairos right / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, holding shield and spear, left elbow resting on sphinx, ivy leaf above knee, A on throne, bow to outer right. Good VF, scattered light porosity, more so on the reverse. Rare.
Westermark attributed this issue to Eumenes I. However, a more recent analysis of hoard evidence has indicated that this coinage is actually struck during the lifetime of Philetairos, near the end of his reign, following the limited issue of tetradrachms bearing the portrait of Seleukos I. Kyzikos (BC 400-330) EL Stater3194 viewsca 380 BC. EL Stater (16.03g). Bearded and horned head of Silenus (or Pan) left, wearing ivy wreath; tunny below / Quadripartite incuse square with granular surfaces. Rare. A stunning portrait of late Classical style and a lovely reddish tone. Insignificant flan crack, otherwise EF.
Ex Sotheby’s sale 3/1996, 109; Star Coll. This stater speaks to the relations between Cyzicus and its great trading partner, Panticapaeum, where numerous Cyzicene staters have been found, testifying to their broad circulation in Crimea. This arresting Pan-Silenus head seems to have been borrowed from the obverse of the gold staters of Panticapaeum, which were issued in great quantity from ca 350-320 BC; if the stater predates that period, the motif may be inspired by other art from Panticapaeum. There is ample evidence of the relation of these two cities as supplier and consumer of gold. It has been suggested that the main supply of gold for Cyzicene staters was the rich mines of the Ural mountains.

Lampsakos (BC 394-330) AV Stater - Artabazos3187 viewsArtabazos, Satrap of Daskylion, ca 356 BC. AV Stater (8.46g, 3h). Head of Artabazos left, wearing a Persian tiara tied with a diadem / Forepart of Pegasos right in shallow incuse. Good VF, a few light scratches. Extremely rare, only six examples recorded, four of which are in museum collections.
Traditionally, this stater has been assigned to the satrap Orontes, based on the similarity of its reverse to silver and bronze coins believed to have been struck by him at Lampsakos. Although Orontes did control portions of Mysia, he was in fact subordinate to his kinsman Artabazos who was the true satrap of the entire region of Daskylion, which encompassed Lampsakos at the time this coin was struck. When both Orontes and Artabazos rebelled against the Persian king Artaxerxes III in 357 BC, Artabazos secured Lampsakos through the agency of the hired Athenian mercenary, Chares. When Chares accomplished his mission, Artabazos richly rewarded him in coin, the likely occasion for striking this issue.

Lampsakos (BC 394-330) AV Stater - Demeter2767 viewsca 370 BC. AV Stater (8.35g), Persic standard. Half length figure of Demeter, wearing girdled chiton and himation, rising left from earth, holding three ears of grain; behind left shoulder, two ears of grain and vine bearing two bunches of grapes / Forepart of winged horse right with curved wing. Good VF. Extremely rare, only two known specimens, this being the only one in private hands. Ex Gillet Coll.; Weber Coll., 5096.
Following the example and standard of the Persic daric, Lampsakos was the first Greek city to make regular issues of gold coinage which enjoyed an international circulation from Sicily to the Black Sea. As at Kyzikos, the quality of engraving was very high, and types changed frequently: about forty types were produced in a period of about sixty years, one of the most interesting of which is the highly original rendering of Demeter Chthonia rising from the ground. Chthonic deities were those whose powers came from the earth. An important aspect of Demeter celebrated in the Eleusinian Mysteries was that she was venerated as an earth-goddess who symbolised the annual cycle of death and rebirth in nature, especially the grain harvest.

Good VF, toned, slightly granular surface. Very rare, Maffre located thirteen extant examples, eight of which are in museum collections. Ex Giessener Münzhandlung 69 (11/1994), lot 276a.
Struck during the period of warfare between Spartans and Persians, this issue commenced after Pharnabazos received the responsibility for the management of the Achaemenid navy in 398 BC, and ended with the temporary closure of the mint in 396 BC due to the Spartan presence in the area. Maffre's die study suggests that, although only 13 examples are known today, the coinage was quite massive and instrumental in facilitating Pharnabazos' naval success that culminated in the Battle of Knidos.

For the better part of 4th century BC, Lampsakos issued gold staters with forepart of Pegasus with a variety of obverse types. Few Greek cities were issuing gold at this time, and that Lampsakos was able to start such a project and maintain it for five or six decades, speaks volumes of its wealth and importance. Lampsakos had issued an important group of electrum staters in earlier times. Its gold staters apparently enjoyed wide distribution. Baldwin documented 41 issues of Lampsakene staters in her 1924 study, which is still the standard work. Of these, 8 bore figural types and 32 bore portraits, revealing a preference for the latter category. The chief difficulty Baldwin encountered in ordering the series was the surprising lack of die links between issues; in fact only once was a reverse die carried over from one issue to another, making a global die study impossible. For die studies within each issue, she located 5 examples of Hermes staters that were struck with 5 obverse and 4 reverse dies.

(BC 133-130) Eumenes III - Cistophoric Tetradrachm1705 viewsEumenes III (Aristonikos), pretender to the throne of Pergamon, 133-130 BC. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (12.47g), struck in Lydia, Thyateia, dated year 2 (of his revolt=132/1 BC). Cista mystica with serpent; all within ivy wreath / Bow-case with serpents; thunderbolt above, [Θ]ΥΑ, to left; male head (Dionysos?) to right; within coils of serpents, BA-EY and B (date). VF, toned, reverse slightly double-struck. Very rare.
When the Pergamene king Attalos II died in 134 BC, he bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans. Because the Romans were slow in securing their claim, Aristonikos, son of the earlier Pergamene king Eumenes II, filled the power vacuum, claiming the throne and taking the dynastic name Eumenes. Although unable to capture Pergamon, his revolt lasted four years, until he was defeated and captured by the Romans under the consul M. Perperna. After his surrender, he was paraded through Rome and executed.

(BC 284-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm1650 viewsPhiletairos I, 284-263 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.70g). Diademed head of Seleukos I right / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, holding shield and spear, ivy leaf before, bow behind, A on throne. Good VF, reverse a little rough, with scrapes and light graffiti. Rare.
When Lysimachos established the mint of Pergamon, he entrusted its treasury to the eunuch Philetairos. In the latter 280s BC, Philetairos changed his allegiance to Seleukos I. Shortly thereafter in 281 BC, Lysimachos was defeated by Seleukos at the Battle of Korupedion. Although Seleukos was assassinated the following year, Philetairos continued to acknowledge Seleukid primacy. This coinage, commemorating Seleukos I, was struck while Pergamon was still loyal to the Seleukids, under their king Antiochos I. Houghton & Lorber (SC), citing Le Rider and Newell, assign this coinage to the aftermath of Antiochos' victory over the Galatians, circa 269/8 BC.

Parion (BC 165-160) Tetradrachm1333 viewsca 165-160 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.61g, 40mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / ΑΠΟΛΛΟÎΩΣ - ΑΚΤΑΙΟΥ, Apollo Actaeus standing left, holding laurel branch in right hand and resting left on grounded bow; ΔΙ ligate over altar to left, monogram to right, ΠΑΡΙΑÎΩΠin exergue. Very broad flan, aEF. Extremely rare, only few specimens known.
The only Parion Hellenistic tetradrachms known, until recently, was the extremely rare issue showing veiled head of Demeter on obv. and Apollo Actaeus on rev. holding a phiale above a lighted alter, his left hand resting on a lyre placed on the omphalos, SNG Lewis 829, SNG France 1401 (both broken); L. Robert, Monnaies antiques en Troade, Paris, 1966, p. 43, f. This new and until very recently unrecorded issue was published by A.R. Meadows, NC 1998, pp 42-46. He compares both issues to the coinage of Alexandria Troas and determined that the tetradrachm Apollo/Apollo should be dated at around 165-143 and the tetradrachm Demeter / Apollo at a later date.
