Uncertain (AD 96-98) Cistophoric Tetradrachm - Nerva562 viewsNerva, 96-98 AD. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (10.07g, 7h). Uncertain Asia Minor (or Rome) mint. Struck 97 AD. Laureate head right / Distyle temple set on four-tiered base; within, cult statue of Augustus standing facing, holding spear, being crowned with wreath by female figure holding cornucopiae; ROMA ET AVG across entablature. VF. While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style, legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis point to Rome, suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital and then sent to Asia for local use.

Varieties of this type have appeared at auction recently, and have been tentatively attributed to Neandria in Troas, where an early fraction featured a helmet on the obverse. While an attribution to a mint in that region is reasonable, Neandria is probably not correct, as its early fractions consistently feature a ram or barley grain on the reverse, which were emblematic of the city. At the same time, the nearby city of Larissa consistently featured an amphora on the reverse of nearly all of its coinage, which would make it a more likely candidate.

Uncertain (BC 500-450) cow - Hemistater?489 views5th century BC. AR (6.05g). Cow standing left, head reverted, calf suckling right / Incuse head of African man left. Gemini sale 4, 2008, 195 (these dies). Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second known. Lightly toned, EF.

A mint in Caria or Lycia in the 5th century BC has been suggested, and its weight of 6.05 grams suggests it was intended as a half-stater of the Aeginetan or Samian standard. The most likely influence might have been the electrum sixths of Phocaea attributed by Bodenstedt (Ph24 and Ph54) to before 522 BC and to the period 477-388 BC. This might be especially relevant since the Phocaean sister-coinage of Mytilene of ca 521-455 BC uses for its reverses the heads of animals and the head of Heracles, all of which are rendered incuse.

Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from front / Minerva standing left, shield at feet, holding thunderbolt and reverted spear. VF, obverse struck with slightly rusty dies. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Mark Antony and Octavia (cf. RSC 3). Unique and unknown to Metcalf. Metcalf assigned the reverse type, known from a single specimen (SNG von Aulock 6613), to an uncertain Mint D, while the obverse die he placed at uncertain Mint A, where it is struck with both a bundle of grain ears and Tyche Soterios as reverses. Minerva is unrecorded at Mint A.

In the Gorny sale, the head on the obverse is identified as Athena, but the clearly short hair makes such a determination unlikely. Nevertheless, the style and fabric of this coin suggests a mint in northwest Asia Minor, perhaps Ionia.

Uncertain (BC 350-300) Drachm - Memnon423 viewsca 350-300 BC. AR Drachm (3.19g). Head of Helios with nimbus left / Rosebud, M-E. EF. Rare. Ex Bankhaus Aufhäuser 11 (München, 1995), lot 111.

Since variants with EY and NI exist (instead of ME), Ashton suggests a localization in the vicinity of the Dardanelles and links this issue to the two Rhodian brothers Memnon and Mentor.
