(BC 520-480) Uncertain Dynast - 1/2 Stater?976 viewsca 521-478 BC. AR Drachm (4.12g, 14mm). Forepart of winged bull right / Quadripartite incuse square divided diagonally. Good VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare. Ex Leu 65 (5/1996), lot 202.
Leu sale attributed this issue to an uncertain mint in Ionia, noting the similarity of the style to the archaic issues of Klazomenai that feature a winged boar forepart. It is also similar in style to various winged boar foreparts on contemporary issues at Mytilene. While agreeing with these comparisons, the weight of this example and its diagonally divided incuse are more consistent with issues of Lesbos than Ionia. The bull is also a common type used at Mytilene, but relatively rare among issues in Ionia. Finally, in addition to using winged boars, Mytilene used winged lions, so the appearance of a winged bull would not be surprising (especially as all motifs are common in eastern/Persian art). So, while the attribution to Mytilene is conjectural, the preponderance of the evidence weighs greater in its favor than than to a mint in Ionia.

The lion/star motif is usually representative of the Carian Hekatomnid Dynasty. However, the Lycian letters identifying Xanthos is a mystery. The coin may have been struck following the fall of Perikle in the failed Revolt of the Satraps (361 BC), when Lycia lost its independence and Maussolos may have inherited jurisdiction over it.

Lion right, biting into the hindquarter of a bull crouching left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with sphinx on each side; triskeles to left. EF, toned, minor die break on reverse.
Many late Lycian dynastic coins bear legends on both sides that had long been assumed to be the names of two dynasts, who ostensibly issued joint coinages. However, more recent evidence has proved that names such as Wedrei, Zagaba, and Zemuri are actually names of cities, which are probably the mints of the respective issues they appear on (cf. A.G. Keen, Dynastic Lycia: A Political History of the Lycians & Their Relations with Foreign Powers, c. 545-362 BC [Leiden: Brill, 1998], pp. 109 and 154–5).

This short series of coinage from Oinoanda was apparently struck in three series, each marked with A, B, or Γ. Originally these letters were thought to represent dates on a local era, but Ashton’s study shows this is far from conclusive, regardless that they were struck sequentially. The obverse die used for this coin was originally used for series 2 didrachms, which have a B on the obverse.
