Alabanda (BC 197-190) Tetradrachm1193 viewsca 197-190/188 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.70g). Struck as Antiocheia, under Antiochos III of Syria. Laureate head of Apollo left / [ΑÎΤ]ΙΟΧΕΩÎ, Pegasos springing right; ΤΙΜΟΚΩΠ(magistrate) below. Good VF. Rare.
Alabanda was situated in northern Caria on the river Marsyas, about 30 km from its confluence with the Maeander. The first coins known for the city are the issues struck in the name of Antiocheia in honour of Antiochus III of Syria, during his attempt to recover Asia Minor in the early 2nd century (cf. Houghton, SC p. 352). After his defeat at the battle of Magnesia in 190 BC, Alabanda reverted to its old name and issued tetradrachms with magistrate names as well as Alexander-type tetradrachms, but it was not until about 167 that the bulk of the 'dated' A-B coins were issued (cf. SNG Helsinki 1-5). For an in-depth analysis into this coinage, see N. Waggoner, 'A new wrinkle in the Hellenistic coinage of Antioch/Alabanda' in Kraay-Morkholm Essays, 1989, pp. 284-290.

Karia Uncertain (BC 470-420) Drachm908 viewsca 430 BC. AR Drachm (3.78g, 3h). Gorgoneion with out-stretched tongue, surround by four wings arranged in clockwise direction / Harpy with four wings and stretched claws flying right, 3 pellets to left, all in deep incuse square. Very rare. Light toning, VF.
One of the very rare representations of a Harpy on an ancient coin. The dating and assignment to a Carian mint are not completely secure - one finds the Harpy motif on other Carian Incerta from the second half of the 5th century BC (see Troxell, Winged Carians, p. 262, 37-40), but a mint in Lycia could also be conceivable.

Mylasa (BC 6th cent) EL 1/48 Stater908 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL 1/48 Stater (Milesian standard), (0.28g). Lion's paw / Scorpion in incuse square. EF.
The lion's paw fractions are traditionally attributed to Lydia, since the lion was the Lydian royal badge. J. Spier, Studies Price, pp. 327-334, has discovered several reverse-punch links between lion's paw fractions and some Ionian issues, but this might only mean that the linked coinages were produced by the same team of workers, who carried the same reverse punches from one job to the next.

(BC 400-350) Uncertain Satrap - Tetartemorion765 viewsEarly-mid 4th cenutry BC. AR Tetartemorion(?) (6mm, 0.21g). Mylasa mint(?). Head of the Persian Great King left / Stellate pattern of Milesian style. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, porous. Extremely rare.
It is unlikely that this coin was part of a Persian-related issue at Miletos. In the early 4th century, however, the Milesian stellate pattern reverse was revived in the fractional coinage of the Hekatomnid satraps of Caria that were struck at Mylasa. These coins used the Milesian weight standard, which is likely the reason for their revival of that particular stellate type. There are a variety of issues from Caria during the Persian period that used Persian iconography, so it is likely that this coin belongs among these issues, and perhaps was struck under the Hekatomnids at Mylasa.
