Philadelphia (AD 37-41) AE 19 - Caligula660 viewsGaius (Caligula), 37-41 AD. AE19 (4.27g, 2h). Artemon, son of Hermogenos, moneyer. ΓΑΙΟC ΚΑΙCΑP ΓΕPΜΑΝ[ΙΚΟC] / ΝΕΟΚΑΙCΑPΕΩΝ, laureate head right / ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙ[Ν]ΑΝ ΑP[ΤΕΜΩ]Ν ΕΠΜΟΓΕΝΟC, Agrippina Senior seated right on chair with ornate legs, holding sceptre and cornucopiae. VF, choice jade green patina. Rare.

It appears that the names of locals on the coins of Philadelphia do not represent magistrates in charge of a specific office, but rather citizens who may have sponsored the production of a certain series of coins. Artemon, in this case, may have dedicated a shrine to the emperor's mother, and celebrated the event with a coin issue.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale even wore Hercules’ lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.

The type appears to commemorate some honor granted to the cult of Kore at Smyrna by Caracalla during his sole reign. No coins of Smyrna naming the archon Mithros were known to Head in BMC Lydia, p. civ, but there are two coins of Julia Domna naming this magistrate in SNG von Aulock, 3156 and 8256.

Tmolos-Aureliopolis (AD 177-192) AE 38 - Commodus643 viewsCommodus, 177-192 AD. AE38 (29.53g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Dionysus holding scepter in chariot drawn left by biga of centaurs. Fine, brown and green rough surfaces, minor deposits. Very rare. Ex. Wagner Coll.

According to Euripides (Bacchae 461-464), Mount Tmolus was the birthplace of the god Dionysus. The son of Zeus and Semele (a princess of Thebes), Dionysus was a god of fertility, vegetation and wine. He is often depicted being transported in a car drawn either by panthers, or (as in this case) by centaurs, surrounded by an entourage of satyrs, sileni, maenads, and nymphs. A number of important festivals were held in his honor; most famous were the Lesser or Rural Dionysia (in late December), the Greater or City Dionysia (in late spring), the Anthesteria (in early spring), and the Lenaea (in winter). His characteristic worship was ecstatic, and women, known as maenads, were prominently involved. Votaries, through music, dancing, and drinking, and through eating flesh and blood of sacrificial animals, attempted to merge their identities with the wildness of nature.

On this coin the letter “o” in Caracalla’s official name, Antoninus, is a clearly engraved omicron, rather than the omega more regularly encountered. Under a lens, however, the additional line visible suggests that the celator may have attempted to correct his mistake; as it proceeds over the letter and partially into the field, this line, however, may be part of a serendipitous die break.

Ti. Julius Ferox served as prconsul of Asia in the last year of Trajan's reign. In that post he would have had to deal with Trajan's Persian invasion, revolts in Judaea and the aftermath of the great Antioch earthquake of 115. Earlier he held the suffect consulship in 100, and from 101-104 served as curator alvei Tiberis et reparum et cloac. urbis, the official responsible for the banks and channels of the Tiber. The post was instituted by Augustus because of the frequent inundations of that river.

Saitta (AD 193-197) AE 26 - Claudius Albinus592 viewsClodius Albinus, as Caesar, 193-197 AD. AE26 (10.16g). Bearded head right / Aphrodite, nude and diademed, standing left and covering herself, small winged Eros at left, holding torch, dolphin diving at right. Nice VF, smooth black patina, clear types. Extremely Rare.

Clodius Albinus was a tragic figure whose eastern coinages are quite rare, and this particular coin features an important reverse of artistic merit: the scene is a third generation copy of a Praxiteles sculpture, the first nude rendering of the goddess Aphrodite Knidia in the bath supported by a dolphin. This same imagery was subsequently copied for the Villa Medici in Rome, where it is known as "Venus Medici," and it became a popular Renaissance theme, being the subject of some Boticelli paintings.
