This puzzling issue was earlier attributed to both Cyzicus and Macedonia. However, due to weakly struck examples, the seal between the fish has never been recognized before ("an oval object between two pellets" and the like). The weight standard is clearly Phocaean and not Milesian, so unlikely to have been used in Northern Greece.

This is the second known example of an Anakreon didrachm, the first being a coin that turned up last year with the magistrate's name Aristonax. The magistrate Prokleides also appears on a drachm that shares its obverse die with an Aristonax drachm (see CNG Auction 55, lot 519). Anakreon (fl. late 6th Century BC) was a lyric poet who was a native of Teos. This issue marks his first appearance on a coin, and in fact this is probably the first appearance of any poet on a coin. Anakreon continued to appear on coins from Teos down through Roman times.

Kyzikos (BC 404-394) Tridrachm1176 viewsca 404-394 BC. AR Tridrachm (11.41g, 21mm, 6h). Herakliskos Drakonopnigon: the Infant Herakles crouching right, strangling a serpent coiled around each arm; Σ-Y-[N] around / Head of lion left; below, tunny left; KY-ZI around; all within shallow incuse circle. Near EF, old collection tone, slightly off center, some marks on the reverse. Extremely rare, only BM example known for this symmachy issue at Kyzikos. MPM coll., acquired in 1928.

The British Museum acquired the only known example of this type from a dealer in Rhodes in 1927 (cf. N. Hardwick in QT XXV [1996]), as part of a group of four coins that had been found together. As the present coin was acquired by the consignor’s grandfather in 1928, it is possible that it was part of the same find that contained the BM coin. A comparison of color photographs of the two coins reveals a similar surface appearance that is consistent with coins from a common hoard.

Cyprus Uncertain (BC 450) Stater1173 viewsca 450 BC. AR Stater (10.52g). Cow right suckling calf, eagle flying right, "ankh" in right field topped with owl's head / Bull standing right, plow above, owl's head below. Good VF. Extremely rare; one of only three known coins. Ex Geissener Muenzhandlung 44 (4/1989), lot 463.

The examples of this coin are known: this piece, the Paris specimen, and one in a private collection (from Leu 50, lot 216). There is another coin in Paris from the Seyrig Collection which is stuck from the same dies, but in an earlier state, before the dies were recut to add the owl heads. Originally attributed to a Phoenician mint and later an uncertain Cilician mint, M. Amandry has since convincingly argued that the style does not fit the Sidonian origin and directs one to another coin (see Sternberg XVII, 180) possibly from the same obverse die, but with heavier recutting, that has a more Cypriote-appearing reverse.

Philadelphia (AD 35-37) AE 16 - Tiberius Gemellus1166 viewsTiberius Gemellus(?), co-heir of Tiberius. AE16 (3.18g), struck ca 35-37 AD. TIBERION [CEBACTON], bare head of Tiberius Gemellus(?) right / N[EO]KEC"PEIC, winged thunderbolt. Dark green patina, gF. Extremely rare.

Tiberius Gemellus, born 19 AD, was twin brother to Germanicus Gemellus. They were the sons of Livilla, sister of Germanicus and Claudius, and given to her husband Drusus, son of emperor Tiberius. However, it is probable that they were fathered by Sejanus, the ambitious prefect of Tiberius. During the last years of Tiberius' life, his options for an heir had narrowed to his only 'grandson' Tiberius Gemellus and his grandnephew Caligula. Both men were adopted as co-heirs in 35. However, when Tiberius died in 37, the prefect Macro declared Caligula the new emperor, as the two had prearranged. For appearances, Tiberius Gemellus was hailed princeps iuventutis, but within months was executed for treason. This portrait is especially important because it depicts him not as a child, but as a teen and heir to the throne. All coins from this issue share the same obverse die.

(BC 130-112/0) Ariarathes VI - Drachm1156 viewsAriarathes VI Epiphanes Philopator, ca 130-112/0 BC. AR Drachm (18mm, 4.18g, 12h). Mint C (Komana?). Diademed head right, wearing short beard / Athena standing left, holding wreath and palm; monograms to inner left and outer right, I in exergue. VF, lightly toned, a few light marks on obverse. Unpublished with bearded portrait.

The standard depiction is of Athena Nikephoros, but here she holds a wreath and palm rather than Nike and spear. The Cappadocian warrior-goddess Enyo-Ma was their local version of Athena, and Mørkholm thought this rendition of Athena may have been more closely based on the standard depiction of this local goddess, whose temple was at Komana. This unusual depiction only occurred on Mørkholm's issues 3 and 4 at mint C, and he was uncertain of the underlying reason for its appearance. Mint C was apparently established during the reign of Ariarathes VI, most likely due to uncertain military necessities. Although the location of the mint at Komana is not certain, issues of this mint have a metrological affinity with those of mint A (Eusebia-Mazaka [Caesarea]), suggesting a location proximate to the latter.

Smyrna (BC 75-50) Drachm1145 viewsca 75-50 BC. AR Drachm (3.89g, 12h). Homereia type. Megakles, magistrate. Head of Apollo right, wearing laurel wreath / Homer seated left, holding scroll; scepter behind, MEΓAKΛ[HΣ] to left. VF, minor porosity, very light cleaning marks, small flan flaw on chin. Very rare denomination, unpublished with this magistrate.

The magistrate Megakles is only known for Milne’s period XVII coinage, and the obverse die link to the drachms of Apollonios of this period confirms this placement. While the tetradrachms of Smyrna used local reverse types not found on other denominations, the very rare drachms employ the famous ‘Homereia’ type found on the relatively common bronzes. Strabo specifically mentions this bronze coinage when, discussing the city, he says "there is also a library; and the 'Homereum', a quadrangular portico containing a shrine and wooden statue of Homer; for the Smyrnaeans also lay especial claim to the poet and indeed a bronze coin of theirs is called a Homereum" (Strabo, Geographica XIV, I.37, transl. by H.C. Jones, The Geography of Strabo, VI [Loeb, 1960], pp. 245-247).

Phokaia (AD 244-249) AE 40 - Philip I1145 viewsPhilip I, 244-249 AD. AE40 - Medallion (29.67g, 6h). Cl. Scribonianus, strategus. • A • K • MAP • IOV • • ΦIΛIΠΠOC •, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / • ЄΠ • CT KΛ • CKPЄI/• BωNIA/NOY • above, • ΦωKAIЄωN • in exergue, dog standing right, biting into a captured dolphin left with tail upturned. Good VF, brown patina. Extremely rare, one of two known (the other is in the BM).

The enigmatic reverse type of this coin has defied any substantially conclusive explanation. Phocaea’s extant foundation mythology does not include this topos, and the civic badge was the seal, rather than the dolphin. To date, Head’s suggestion (HN, p. 590) seems the only explanatory attempt: the dog is a personification of the local river, the Smardos, rushing down to the sea, personified by the dolphin. Otherwise, the meaning of this scene is unknown.
