The only Parion Hellenistic tetradrachms known, until recently, was the extremely rare issue showing veiled head of Demeter on obv. and Apollo Actaeus on rev. holding a phiale above a lighted alter, his left hand resting on a lyre placed on the omphalos, SNG Lewis 829, SNG France 1401 (both broken); L. Robert, Monnaies antiques en Troade, Paris, 1966, p. 43, f. This new and until very recently unrecorded issue was published by A.R. Meadows, NC 1998, pp 42-46. He compares both issues to the coinage of Alexandria Troas and determined that the tetradrachm Apollo/Apollo should be dated at around 165-143 and the tetradrachm Demeter / Apollo at a later date.

This coin appears to belong to a diverse series of electrum staters struck on the Milesian standard that Kraay (ACGC p. 30), and others, have tentatively attributed to the period of the Ionian Revolt. Although none have ethnics, the obverses of many of the coins are of types common to various cities involved in the revolt. Kraay notes the significant problem with the theory is that none of these coins feature a type attributable to Miletos, the city that led the revolt, but he proposed that it was possible the entire series was struck there as a centralized mint. Thus the types could either represent the cities that contributed resources to the revolt or successive Milesian officials who oversaw the coinage production. If the obverse type does represent the city, this issue would most likely belong to Klazomenai, all of whose contemporary coinage featured a winged-boar forepart.

Mytilene (AD 5) AE 17 - Theophanes & Archedamis1305 viewsTime of Augustus, circa 5 AD. Theophanes, with Archedamis, died 44-36 BC. AE17 (5.91g, 12h). ΘЄOC ΘЄOΦANHC, bare head of Theophanes right / ΘЄA APXЄΔAMIC, draped and veiled bust of Archedamis right. Fine, rough orichalchum surfaces, flan flaw on obverse. Rare.
According to Plutarch (Vit. Pomp. 42), the historian and politician Theophanes of Mytilene was a friend and political ally of Pompey. Such was the influence of Theophanes that he was able to secure in 62 BC the independence of Mytilene from the triumvir. Following his death, sometime between 44 and 36 BC, Theophanes, along with Archedamis (presumably his wife), were accorded divine honors in recognition for their benefaction. The date of this coinage is uncertain, but it was probably issued circa 5 AD when M. Pompeius Theophanes, a descendent of the earlier Theophanes and a friend of Tiberius was procurator of Asia, but certainly the coins predate 33 AD, when Tiberius ordered the execution of Theophanes’ remaining descendents, and forbade any public reference to the now-outlawed family (Tac. Ann. 6.18).

Diademed head right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΡΙΟΒΑΡZΑÎΟΥ ΦΙΛΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΥ, Athena Nikephoros standing left; H (date) in exergue. Good VF, iridescent toning. Rare in this condition.
Coins of Ariobarzanes II are rare in the Cappadocian series, and are typically found poorly struck or struck on poor metal. The engraving also usually appears to have been done in haste, perhaps reflecting his issues were struck in a time of expediency. His father’s coinage (Ariobarzanes I) was plentiful, and are the most common Cappadocian coins found today. It is possible that so much was in circulation during his son’s reign that Ariobarzanes II’s issues were relatively small.

(AD 38-64) Polemo II - Drachm RY141257 viewsPolemo II, with Agrippina Junior(?), 38-64 AD. AR Drachm (3.59g, 1h). Dated RY 14 (51/2 AD). Diademed head of Polemo right / Diademed and draped bust of Agrippina Junior right; IΔ (date) to right. VF, toned, minor hairline flan crack, scratch under tone on reverse. Very rare.
Burnett in RPC I identified the female on these drachms as Antonia Tryphonaea, mother of Polemo II, based on the portrait’s similarity to silver and bronze issues which also bear her name. These drachms, however, have no such identifying legend and from the known regnal dates, were struck during the period AD 49-54. Stylistically, they fit within the series bearing clearly identifiable portraits of Claudius and Nero, as well as two examples, dated AD 55/6 and AD 56/7, with a portrait which Burnett tentatively identified as that of Britannicus. As Polemo owed his installation as king to Agrippina Junior’s brother, Caligula, it is quite possible that Claudius’ marriage to his benefactor’s sister in AD 49 prompted him to begin striking these coins which continued, as evidenced by the regnal dates, during her period of influence at court.
