Contemporary to these coinage issues, Cilicia was part of the Achaemenid Persian empire, with Tarsos being its most prominent eastern city. According to Colin Kraay's article "The Celenderis Hoard" (NumChron [1962], pp. 1-15) and book, Archaic and Classical Greek Coins, they are among the earliest issues of Tarsos. Based on the marine implications of the obverse types (and reverse of the stater), coupled with the general dating of the issue, it is quite possible that they were made in conjunction with the mobilization of the Phoenician fleet by Tissaphernes at Aspendos in 411-410 BC.

The obverse appears to have a die match with that of B61 and the reverse appears to have a die match with that of B55. The die matches are not conclusive due to the different relative wear of the respective examples. However, the obverse and reverse are firmly related to earlier emissions.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B90 type 6 562 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.53g, 10mm). Wreathed head of young Dionysos right/ Facing large head of satyr with small ‘animal ears’, shaggy hair, close cropped beard and moustache, furrowed brow, ivy leaf top right in field, all within linear square. EF. Carr coll.
Bodenstedt notes 16 obv. and 25 rev. dies. His reverse die varieties can be simplified to small variations of 3 different head types and 4 “motifs†that occur in the field. The 3 different head types are: small bald head with long tousled beard swept back, smooth forehead, long pointed ears upward; larger head, shaggy hair and close cropped beard and moustache, small ‘animal ears’, furrowed or smooth brow; as previous type but shaggy hair (as in this example). The 4 “motifs†are additions in the field: an ivy leaf, upper right and sometimes lower left corners; grapes, lower left corner (Bodenstedt makes a distinction on basis of a stem being present); 8-armed/beamed star top right corner; and, 8-armed/beamed star top left corner.
These 7 simplified reverse varieties/types for Bodenstedt 90 have been described elsewhere on this website (see Coin ID #11346). Second known from auction.

Mytilene (BC 477-455) EL Hekte - B-562 viewsca 478-455 BC. EL Hekte (2.50g, 9.5mm, 11h). Head of female right, hair bound in sakkos; Λ¬E flanking neck; all on raised disk / Incuse head of cock right; small square behind neck. gVF.
The cataloguer at CNG described this coin as “Unique.†If genuine, this is a fascinating and important coin as its obverse and reverse are of an unknown type and the obverse appears to be a ‘shield-like’. The obverse has a ‘hint’ of an under-type at 5 o’clock.
The coin is an ‘enigma’: The reverse is a cock's head facing right. B3, B7 and B9 are comparable portraits but all face left. The reverse type suggests that the coin is pre-455 BC but the obverse has a portrait of a woman which is unknown for the early series. The 'shield-like' attachment on the obverse does not have a precedent in the Mytilene series.

For similar Bithynian coins under Domitian, see RPC II 632, 653, and 671, which copy Latin legend “Mars†sestertii struck AD 80-82 at an uncertain mint either in Thrace or Bithynia (for discussion of the mints see: A. Burnett, “Regional coinage in Thrace and Bithynia during the Flavian period,†Travaux Le Rider pp. 95-101; Herbert Cahn, “An Imperial mint in Bithynia,†INJ 8 (1984/5), pp. 14-26). In place of the “S C†across the reverse field, however, one finds civic monograms in two parts for Nicaea (“NKA - ΠΡ†), Nicomedia (“NKO - ΠΡâ€), and Prusias ad Hypium (“ΠΡ - YÎ â€). No such Domitianic “sestertii†survive from Juliopolis, but the current coin and the obverse die-linked von Aulock specimen (which interestingly transforms Pax of the sestertii into Homonoia) demonstrate a continued interest in appropriating Imperial types for local coinage in Bithynia.

Eikonion (AD 138-161) AE 21 - Antoninus Pius558 viewsAntoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. AE21 (4.97g, 6h). IM-P C T A H ANTONINVS, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right / COL ICO, Athena standing facing, head left, holding Nike presenting wreath, and spear; shield leaning against spear at her feet; in left field, serpent. Very rare. Sandy-black patina. Very fine.
Hans von Aulock knew of seven specimens of this type, all in museum collections. He notes the obverse legend ending ANTONINOC, but this seems unlikely given that the city was a Roman colony since the reign of Hadrian and thus should have been using Latin legends on its coinage. Unfortunately, the single specimen he illustrates is struck off center, the British Museum specimen has incomplete legends, and the rest of the examples he cites are not otherwise published, so the spelling cannot be confirmed. The specimen offered here, though, very clearly spells ANTONINVS, which suggests that Von Aulock's reading is in error.
