Female head (Leda ?) right, hair coiled / Head of Nike right, hair bound with a taenia, N-I/K-[A], all within linear square. VF, very rare with only three known. Unknown in standard references. Carr coll. A very rare coin of considerable interest. The obverse has a die match with Bodenstedt 82 which he described as being the head of Leda. That obverse die only known by that single specimen noted by Bodenstadt which has a reverse of a swan. The reverse of this coin is Nike. At the time of sale, only three specimens known of this type. The inscription is not complete on any of the three specimens known but as a combination it is clear that the letters are N-I/K-A. Silvia Hurter in her article, on the first of the specimens known, notes that the inscription makes it clear that the reverse is that of Nike and it can be inferred that this coin was struck to commemorate a victory, but which is uncertain (see Die Nike von Mytilene: Eine anonyme Siegespragung, SM 202, June 2001, pp. 21-22). At the same time, the style of the ram’s head here is a perfect match to the type found on the early silver issues at Kebren (cf. SNG Ashmolean 1076–7). That only 2 obverse and 2 reverse dies are known makes it clear that it was meant to be a special issue (or perhaps an originally large issue cut short). It must have been struck after the Alexander-type tetradrachms (Price 3118-3123), which were minted in the late 320s, and it is possible that these distaters were produced shortly after. This coin appears to belong to a diverse series of electrum staters struck on the Milesian standard that Kraay (ACGC p. 30), and others, have tentatively attributed to the period of the Ionian Revolt. Although none have ethnics, the obverses of many of the coins are of types common to various cities involved in the revolt. Kraay notes the significant problem with the theory is that none of these coins feature a type attributable to Miletos, the city that led the revolt, but he proposed that it was possible the entire series was struck there as a centralized mint. Thus the types could either represent the cities that contributed resources to the revolt or successive Milesian officials who oversaw the coinage production. If the obverse type does represent the city, this issue would most likely belong to Klazomenai, all of whose contemporary coinage featured a winged-boar forepart. The early stage is proven by both the irregular form of the incuse (without a clear quadripartite structure) and the style of the obverse image. The nearest stylistic parallel might be a stater of Aeginetic weight, once attributed to Knidos (cf. Cahn, Knidos p. 75 pl. 19, 1 with earlier literature). As defender of the herd or flock, Hermes brought forth fecundity and prosperity, just as Antinoüs would bring good fortune to those who did him honor. VF, toned. Amastris, a niece of Darios III of Persia, became a pawn in the complex dynastic quarrels that followed the death of Alexander. She had been given as wife to Alexander's general Krateros, but was dismissed when Krateros arranged a marriage for himself with the daughter of Antipater. Amastris then married Dionysos, tyrant of Herakleia, by whom she had three children before his death in 306 BC. In 302 BC she married Lysimachos of Thrace, who soon acquired a more profitable alliance by wedding Arsinoe, the daughter of Ptolemy I Soter of Egypt. Amastris then retired to the territory of Herakleia, where she founded a new city named after herself.
