Typically, the ethnic found on the coins of Holmoi, if not trunicated, are in the form ΟΛΜΙΤΙΚΟΝ, ΟΛΜVΤΙΚΟΝ, or ΟΛΜΙΤΟΝ. The form on this coin, ending -AN, is possibly the result of an engraver accustomed to the Aeolic dialect, rather than the standard Attic. Aside from this specimen, there are apparently no recorded coins with this variation of the ethnic.

Very rare, F+/-VF. Hoeft coll.

ΛAN erroneous for ΛAM, but there are some open questions too: KOI seems to be erroneous for KAI, magistrate AΠOΛΛΩNITOC couldn't be found until now. Priapos was born by Aphrodite in Lampsakos. Therefore Lampsakos was the centre of warshipping of Priapos. Here his depiction was more like Dionysos who was said to be his father.

EF, dark green patina, flan crack. A superb, lifelike portrait of the young Caracalla.

This unrecorded coin provides a further expansion of the games-related legends of the coins of Nicaea. "ta megala" is otherwise unattested, and in conjunction with the full legend can be read as "Severeia Philadelpheia in respect to the great ceremonies of the Nicaeans," with the central band inscription reading "The Holy Game." In the late 3rd century a complex cycle of at least fifteen games and associated religious festivals is attested for Nicaea, honoring Dionysus the founder, Apollo Pythius, and various emperors from Augustus to Gallienus. Read along with the very young portrait of Caracalla as Augustus, the legend and type can be taken to indicate that Nicaea sponsored a grand series of festivals to celebrate the joint elevation of Caracalla to Augustus and Geta to Caesar in 198 AD.

Kaisareia (AD 193-194) Drachm - Pescennius Niger629 viewsPescennius Niger, 193-194 AD. AR Denarius - Drachm (2.46g, 18mm, 12h). Caesarea mint. IMP CAES C PESC NIGER IVST AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ΔHMAPXI EΞ O VΠATOC, modius with grain ears. Fine, toned, porous, chipped at 12 o’clock from an attempted piercing. Very rare and important issue.

When Pescennius was proclaimed emperor by his troops in AD 193, he knew his reign as emperor would not be peaceful. He quickly set out to issue huge sums of denarii in his name to pay his troops and to win the loyalty of others. To do this, like so many before him, Pescennius reduced the fineness of his denarii to a point that they were equivalent to the Caesarean drachm. This coin provides a direct link to these events, combining a denarius obverse die and a drachm reverse die. This coin also presents clear evidence that both Antioch and Caesarea struck coins for Pescennius.

The legend CEBASTH (lat. Augusta) may suggest that Poppaea is depicted here as Nike. There is a similar coin from Smyrna with the legend NEIKH ΠOΠΠAIA SMYR where this connection is explicit (SNG 2486).

This coinage had originally been attributed to Poseidion on Karpathos, but Cahn’s analysis of the issues bearing an inscription, πos, has conclusively shown that this legend is not an ethnic and cannot point to a mint in Poseidion. It is most likely struck from a mint on the coast of Caria or one of the other mints that used this form of double rectangular incuse: Ialysos, Kamiros, or Lindos.
