Tarsos (AD 117-138) Tetradrachm - Hadrian & Sabina721 viewsHadrian, with Sabina, 117-138 AD. AR Tetradrachm (13.65g, 27mm, 6h). AYT KAI ΘE (TP)A ΠAP YI ΘE N-EP YI (TP)A AΔPIANOC CE- (ΠΠ), laureate and cuirassed bust of Hadrian right, with aegis on breastplate, slight drapery on shoulder / AY CABEINA CEBACTH KAI AΔPI TAP MH(TP)OΠOΛEΩC, draped bust of Sabina right, wearing stephane; cornucopia behind. EF, minor scuffs and scratches on each bust under old tone. Exceptional portraits. From the Sierra Collection. Ex Gemini III (1/2007), lot 384.
The coinage of Tarsus, like that of the Antioch mint, gives exceptionally full titles for Hadrian, as can be witnessed on this and the previous lot. Here we find an interesting detail in the titles of Sabina as well. The AY can only stand for Augusta, which is quite redundant as the legend also names her the Greek equivalent Σεβαστή.

(BC 500-300) Lead weight - hemihekte721 viewsca 500 BC. Hemihekte lead weight (1.31g, 13.3x8.6mm). Head of Silenos facing / Incuse scallop shell. gVF. Carr coll.
This lead piece appears to be a coin weight for an electrum hemihekte of Phocaic standard. The facing head of Silenos types are commonly found on coins from Sicily, Macedonia, Lesbos, Mysia and Ionia. The scallop shell, while a common type for Italy and Sicily, was used as a control symbol across the Greek world. The weight is appropriate for an electrum hemihekte of standard and type struck in Asia Minor. This appears to be the first recorded specimen, but is consistent with those anticipated by Lang and Crosby, “The Athenian Agora - Volume X: Weights, Measures and Tokens†(1964).

While Magnesia struck a wide variety of denominations in its horseman/bull series, Rhodian weight drachms seem to be inordinately rare: only ten are known, all of different magistrates.

From the collections of H.S. von Aulock and R. Jameson. This is a most enigmatic coin, possibly even unpublished. While it was attributed to Teos in von Aulock, Jameson pointed out that griffin protomes were not used there (but cf. coin #557); Balcer excluded it from his corpus (without comment). It could have been minted in Phokaia, as Babelon pointed out in his commentary on a very similar drachm (Traite'), especially since griffin protomes were used on later issues at Phokaia.

Extremely rare. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex Triton VI (1/2003), lot 441; Tkalec and Rauch (11/1987), lot 141.
Seven tetradrachms of Elaiussa are apparently known: Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale; Washington, Smithsonian (broken); London, British Museum; SNG Levante Supp. 221; CNG 36, lot 2037; CNG 45, lot 475; and the present specimen. According to Houghton and Bendall, the present piece appeared in 1986 in a hoard which also included seven Aegeae tetradrachms. The issue is to be dated after c. 95-94 BC, when Seleukos VI struck coins at Elaiussa, but before 83 BC, when Tigranes extinguished the city's independent existence. Elaiussa was an island in antiquity but is now joined to the mainland.

VF, tan patina, corroded. Extremely rare, one of two known, the other in the BN.
The specimen of this coin in Paris has been known since 1863, being the subject of some debate concerning its authenticity. This second specimen is from the same dies and seems to confirm the reading in Cohen. Domitia's husband, Annius Verus died shortly after the birth of their son in 121 AD, but her family wealth and close connections to the imperial court insured that the youth came to the attention of the emperor Hadrian, who in 138 AD advised Antoninus Pius to adopt him. This coin was probably struck shortly after the accession of Antoninius Pius, and marks the noble family lineage of the new heir apparent of the Roman empire.

Ephesos (AD 117-138) AE 36 - Hadrian 716 viewsHadrian, 117-138 AD. AE36 - Medallion (33.62g, 12h). Struck 129 AD(?). ΑΔΡΙΑÎΟC ΚΑ-ICΑΡ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟC, laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. Near VF, dark green surfaces, minor roughness.
The emperor Hadrian was granted many honorific titles by the Greeks, including "Savior," "Founder," "New Dionysus," "New Heracles," "Panhellenius," and "Savior of the World," but the epithet "Olympius" is perhaps the most presumptuous. During Hadrian’s visits to Athens early in AD 129, he visited the massive Temple of Zeus Olympius (also known as the Olympeion). The Historia Augusta reports that at this time Hadrian dedicated an altar to himself, by virtue of which he seems to have elected himself a god and to have invested himself with the powers of the Olympian Zeus. This issue was possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos later the same year.
