Eikonion (AD 238-244) AE 30 - Gordian III 825 viewsGordian III, 238-244 AD. AE30 (29.18g, 6h). IMP CAE M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / COL A-EL HA-D ICONINS (sic!); in exergue S R, harpa. The emperor on horse galoping right, spear in raised right hand, fallen enemy with Persian cap raising his right hand to right. aEF. Apparently unique and unpublished.
When the Persians under Shapur I invaded Mesopotamia in early 243 AD, Gordian III opened the doors of the Temple of Janus for the very last time in Roman history, and sent an enormous army to the east. The Sassanids were driven back over the Euphrates and then defeated in the Battle of Resaena (near Ceylanopinar in south-east Turkey). This unique and remarkable adventus (arrival) issue of Iconium, identifiable by the harpa of Perseus (an emblem of the city of Iconium) below the exergue, refers to the upcoming battle and suggests that Gordian III visited the city. It was likely struck in anticipation of Roman victory, serving as propaganda intended to boost confidence among both soldiers and citizens of threatened cities.

(BC 370) Perikle - 1/6 Stater825 viewsPerikles, ca 380-360 BC. AR Sixth Stater (10mm, 1.18g, 9h). Wedrei mint. Lion right, biting into the hindquarter of a bull crouching left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with sphinx on each side; triskeles to left. EF, toned, minor die break on reverse.
Many late Lycian dynastic coins bear legends on both sides that had long been assumed to be the names of two dynasts, who ostensibly issued joint coinages. However, more recent evidence has proved that names such as Wedrei, Zagaba, and Zemuri are actually names of cities, which are probably the mints of the respective issues they appear on (cf. A.G. Keen, Dynastic Lycia: A Political History of the Lycians & Their Relations with Foreign Powers, c. 545-362 BC [Leiden: Brill, 1998], pp. 109 and 154–5).

(BC 169-150) Mithradates IV - Tetradrachm822 viewsMithradates IV, ca 170/169-150 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.99g), struck ca 169-150 BC. Diademed and draped busts of Mithradates IV and Laodice right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩ[Σ] / ΜΙΘΡΑΔΑΤΟΥ - ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ / ΛΑΟΔΙΚΗΣ / ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΩÎ, Zeus, with thunderÂbolt, and Hera standing facing side by side, both holding scepter. Extremely rare. An issue of great fascination with two pleasant Hellenistic portraits, surface somewhat porous, otherwise gVF. Ex NAC sale 2 (1990), lot 173. From the Jameson and Salvesen collections.
Mithradates IV Philopator succeeded his brother, Pharnakes I, as king of Pontus and took great pains to undo the damage to the Pontic kingdom caused by Pharnakes’s conflicts with the neighboring Bithynian and Attalid kingdoms. He supported Attalos II against Prousias II of Bithynia in 154 BC, which also made him a friend of Rome. The friendly relationship that he established with the Romans remained firm until it was shattered irreparably by Mithradates VI Eupator and the Asiatic Vespers of 89/8 BC. Although little else is known about the reign of Mithradates IV, his coins reveal much about the king’s desire to present himself as a Hellenistic monarch equal to the Antigonid, Seleucid, and Ptolemaic kings who could trace their bloodlines back to the generals of Alexander the Great. Despite his Iranian ancestry and possession of a backwater kingdom on the Black Sea, this tetradrachm firmly places him in the tradition of Hellenistic royal superpowers. He wears the diadem, the universal symbol of Hellenistic kingship, and is jugate with the head of his wife, Laodice, who also happened to be his sister. The royal jugate portrait was first pioneered by Ptolemy II Philadelphos for gold coins celebrating the deification of his father and mother as well as of himself and his own sister-wife, Arsinoe II. While marriage between brother and sister had a long tradition among the pharaohs and therefore Ptolemy II and Arsinoe II could be seen as continuing the native Egyptian custom, it was not acceptable in mainstream Greek culture. In an attempt to make his brother-sister marriage more palatable to Greeks, the apologists of Ptolemy II appealed to his divinity, pointing out that Zeus and Hera were also brother and sister. The reverse type of this tetradrachm also seems to make the same argument, depicting the full-length figures of Zeus and Hera as a parallel for the portraits of the king and Laodice on the obverse. The type was presumably aimed at a Greek audience (outside of Pontus?) since brother-sister marriages were not unknown among ancient Iranian elites and would not have required any special explanation - and certainly not one appealing to Greek gods - to the native Iranian population of Pontus. In addition to the aspiration to royal greatness in the footsteps of the Ptolemaic kings expressed by this coin, the treatment of the portraits is remarkable. Unlike the frequent tendency towards idealization in Hellenistic royal coin portraits, the portraits of Mithradates VI and Laodice approach a style that seems to underline the non-Greek ethnicity of the Pontic king and queen. The un-Greek character of the royal portraits are at odds with the other features of the coin that virtually scream Greek royal culture following the Ptolemaic model. As such, this coin brilliantly encapsulates the spirit of the Hellenistic Age, in which many non-Greeks sought to elevate themselves through the adoption of Greek cultural elements.

The types on this issue are fairly common in the regions of southwest Asia Minor, Caria, Phrygia, and Lycia. The combination of these two types on a single issue, however, is unknown. At the same time, only one city, Kibyra in Phrygia, used both of these types on its coinage (cf. SNG von Aulock 3719 and 3720). Attribution to that city, though, is doubtful as all of its known issues bear the city ethnic.

Antissa (BC 400-300) Obol815 viewsca 400 BC. AR Obol (8mm, 0.71g, 6h). Youthful male head (apparently a sub-Saharan African) / Club, shown vertically with head below, dividing Α-Î; all within lozenge-shaped incuse. Apparently unpublished and unknown. A fascinating and intriguing coin, toned and clear as found. VF. Acquired in Munich in the late 1990s or early 2000s as "vermutlich Ainos."
There are quite a number of ancient coins that have clear types and easily decipherable legends, yet they still remain uncertain in their attribution. This piece was long thought to be from Ainos, probably because of its lozenge-shaped incuse and the supposed Α - - Πlegend could be paralleled by the early silver diobols of Ainos (May 22 ff.). The fact that those coins clearly have the legend Α-Ι, rather than Α-Πon the present piece, was explained by viewing the club as being a large Ι: this does seem to be reaching a bit! The possible attribution to Antissa, a town on Lesbos, has more to recommend itself. There are a number of late 4th/3rd century AE coins from Antissa (probably chalkoi - as Waddington 635), which have the same reverse type and legend. In addition, early 5th century billon obols, commonly attributed to Mytilene, bear the head of a young African male on their obverses: yet one, as Traité 2, I, 599 and pl. xv, 9, has a clear Α on the reverse (in a lozenge-shaped incuse), thus suggesting the series was minted in Antissa too.
