Wounded giant kneeling left / Herakles running right, wearing lion skin, holding club, bow, and arrows, within dotted border; all in incuse square. Fine, toned, two test cuts. Extremely rare, apparently the 5th known. The first two examples of this type were found in the Larnaca Hoard (IGCH 1272), followed by the example found in the Persepolis deposit (IGCH 1789). These three are all in museum collections. The current location of the Rosen coin is uncertain (it was not included in the portion of his collection sold in Muenzen und Medaillen 72). There, known as Mithra, he served as a mediator between the supreme god Ahura-Mazda and humankind. His attributes were varied, but he soon became associated as a divinity of light and much of the symbolism of the mystery cult that developed around him is cosmologic. The chief participants of the cult were the military, attracted to the masculine aspect of the god and his selfless sacrifice to duty. After defeating Pharnakes II in 47 BC, Asander hoped that Caesar would recognize him as king of Bosporos. Instead, in 46 BC Caesar appointed Mithradates of Pergamon, the illegitimate son of Mithradates VI Eupator and a personal friend. Asander, however, subsequently defeated and killed Mithradates. To support his claim to the throne, Asander married Dynamis, the daughter of Pharnakes II, but for the first four years of his reign, he claimed the title ‘archon’ only, rather than that of ‘basileus.’ The reason for this may be that as Rome had formally recognized the archon Pharnakes II as king, Asander was hoping they would do the same on his behalf – a hope confirmed by Octavian in 43 BC. Isaura was the chief city of the region of Isauria, which became part of the province of Cilicia in Severan times. Isaura gained the honorific of Metropolis at some point in this period, and all its Severan coinage has this title. This coin must pre-date the union of the provinces and the elevation of Isaura. The Hercules head is a precise rendition of the type used by Alexander the great, while the identity of the lion rider has remained a mystery since the coin was first published in 1896. The canonical representation of the fourth labor of Heracles, the capture of the Erymanthean Boar, in sculpture, painting, and coins shows the hero carrying his prize "piggy-back" over his shoulder, sometimes in the act of surprising Eurystheos with it, who hides in a pithos in fright. The present, apparently unpublished piece, has the hero, labeled "The Founder of the Nicaeans," carrying the beast in front of him. There seems to be only one numismatic parallel for this depiction: a medallion of Commodus (Gnecchi 34; Stoll 103), where Heracles is seen in a similar stance, but with the boar on a rock in front of him and the Nemean Lion behind.
