The hereditary kings of Cilicia were invested with the name Syennesis, a royal title more than an actual name. Syennesis III was probably the grandson of Syennesis II, one of the commanders in the fleet of Xerxes, and married a woman named Epyaxa. In 401 BC, the couple supported the revolt of Cyrus II against his brother Artaxerxes II. In return for the assistance, including a body of troops commanded by his son which he offered to Cyrus, Syennesis was himself richly rewarded with gifts and honors. At the same time, though, he sent his other son to Artaxerxes, so that whatever the outcome he might be with the winning side. Syennesis' actions, however, did little to save Cilicia's independence; after 400 BC, it became a satrapy of the Persian Empire.

Asia Minor would seem logical based on provenances.

Isaura (AD 100-200) AE 18940 viewsAutonomous Issues, ca late 2nd cent AD. AE18 (3.10g). Head of Hercules right, wearing lion's skin headdress / Young male with long hair riding lion right and wielding sword. Good VF, brown patina. Scarce city.

Isaura was the chief city of the region of Isauria, which became part of the province of Cilicia in Severan times. Isaura gained the honorific of Metropolis at some point in this period, and all its Severan coinage has this title. This coin must pre-date the union of the provinces and the elevation of Isaura. The Hercules head is a precise rendition of the type used by Alexander the great, while the identity of the lion rider has remained a mystery since the coin was first published in 1896.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-940 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.54g, 6h, 11mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / Female head (Persephone and Hecate) right, wearing triangular earring, within linear square. VF.

The cataloger of this coin thought it to be a “mule” of B100 and B99. However, the reverse is different than B99 with the female wearing triangular earrings. There are no die matches for the obverse and the reverse is a new type. Noting a new emission is important, as it adds two extra years to the period of emissions of hecte from Mytilene. If the emissions did cease with Alexander, then each coin unknown to Bodenstedt supports the view that hecte were issued earlier than he suggests. It appears this is the eighth new emission unknown to Bodenstedt.
