(BC 520-480) Uncertain Dynast - 1/2 Stater?975 viewsca 521-478 BC. AR Drachm (4.12g, 14mm). Forepart of winged bull right / Quadripartite incuse square divided diagonally. Good VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare. Ex Leu 65 (5/1996), lot 202.

Leu sale attributed this issue to an uncertain mint in Ionia, noting the similarity of the style to the archaic issues of Klazomenai that feature a winged boar forepart. It is also similar in style to various winged boar foreparts on contemporary issues at Mytilene. While agreeing with these comparisons, the weight of this example and its diagonally divided incuse are more consistent with issues of Lesbos than Ionia. The bull is also a common type used at Mytilene, but relatively rare among issues in Ionia. Finally, in addition to using winged boars, Mytilene used winged lions, so the appearance of a winged bull would not be surprising (especially as all motifs are common in eastern/Persian art). So, while the attribution to Mytilene is conjectural, the preponderance of the evidence weighs greater in its favor than than to a mint in Ionia.

The lion's paw fractions are traditionally attributed to Lydia, since the lion was the Lydian royal badge. J. Spier, Studies Price, pp. 327-334, has discovered several reverse-punch links between lion's paw fractions and some Ionian issues, but this might only mean that the linked coinages were produced by the same team of workers, who carried the same reverse punches from one job to the next.

Ganymede was the son of Tros, founder of Troy. A youth of great beauty, he was abducted by Zeus while the young man was tending his flocks on Mt. Ida. Carried to Olympus either by an eagle, or Zeus himself in aquiline form, Ganymede served as the god’s cupbearer in place of Hebe, as well as his eromenos. This arrangement angered Hera to such a degree that she would abandon the Trojans in their war against the Greeks. To recompense Tros for the loss of his son, Zeus provided him with a pair of horses so swift, they could cross over water, and which were the ancestors of the horses for which the Trojans were renowned.

Mithras, the central god of the syncretic Hellenistic mystery religion known as Mithraism, was of Persian origin. There, known as Mithra, he served as a mediator between the supreme god Ahura-Mazda and humankind. His attributes were varied, but he soon became associated as a divinity of light and much of the symbolism of the mystery cult that developed around him is cosmologic. The chief participants of the cult were the military, attracted to the masculine aspect of the god and his selfless sacrifice to duty.

Pharnakes was awarded the Bosporan Kingdom by Pompey, for the betrayal of his father Mithradates VI, King of Pontos. Little is known of his 16-year reign except for its ending. During the Civil War between Pompey and Julius Caesar, Pharnakes tried to recapture his father's former territories in Pontos. He won a victory over Caesar's general, Domitius Calvinus, and ordered Romans in the region castrated or put to the sword. In response, Caesar launched a rapid five day war against Pharnakes in 47 BC, culminating in the battle of Zela. Caesar emerged victorious, prompting him to report back to the Senate with the now famous dictum, "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered).

While the staters of this issue are relatively common, the sixth staters are particularly rare. Weber notes that at the time of its publication, the only other example known was in the Bibliothèque Nationale. This may have been in error as a sixth stater is not present in SNG France.
