AIΓEAIΩN ANTΩNIINO VΠOΛEΩC Bearded, draped bust of Asclepius r., thin band in the hair, snake-entwined staff at his l. shoulder / MAKEΔONIKHC ΠICTHC ΘEOΦIΛO, Octastyle temple of Asclepius on steps, statue of Asclepius within, wearing himation, holding snake-entwined staff; in the pediment, eagle flying l.; in the field, date Γ-Σ/C (= year 263 of the local era); below, goat r. between two pellets. For a similar tetradrachm honoring likewise Asclepius, see Prieur 86, 723 and H. Bloesch, Caracalla in Aigeai, Atti (Proceedings) Congresso Internazionale di Numismatica, Roma 1961 (1965), 307 seq. Unique, unpublished and very interesting type. Very fine.
The sanctuary of Asclepius in Aegeae was certainly not as famous as the ones in Epidaurus, Kos or Pergamum, but still well known. The rather unusual use of base silver for these rare autonomous issues (dated 262 and 263 of the local era = AD 215/216 ans 216-217) as well as their types refer to an illness of Caracalla and of his attempt of being healed by visiting sanctuaries of Asclepius such as Pergamum and probably Aegeae.

EF, dark brown patina, flan flaws on reverse and edge. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex CNG 63 (5/2003), lot 1015.
The identity of the female on rev is uncertain in references; Franke & Nolle describe her as Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis; BMC simple calls her a goddess. Neither describe Pegasus being held by Zeus, and this may be the clue to her identity and the relevance of the scene. Pegasus, born of Medusa and tamed by Bellerophon, later throws off his mortal master and ascends to heaven, where he becomes the horse of Zeus and symbol of immortality, associated with the apotheosis of semi-divine mortals. The veiled female figure may be Faustina herself, presenting to Zeus her twin children, Aelius Aurelius and Aurelius Antoninus, who died shortly after their birth in 149.

Until recently, the coins of Larisa Troas were believed to be from Larisa Phrikonis in Aiolis. Silver coins from this city are extremely rare, with only four published specimens, all of which are diobols (Winterthur 2767; Traite' II 2064; Imhoof-Blumer, "Antike Griechishe Muenzen," SNR 19 (1913), 87; and Wroth, "Greek Coins acquired by the British Museum in 1901," NumChron 1902, 26). Thus, this apparently unique specimen is the largest silver coin known for Larisa.

Memnon (BC 340-334) Siglos1005 viewsMemnon of Rhodes, Satrap in Ionia, ca 340-334 BC. Ephesos? AR Siglos (5.46g, 3h). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, holding dagger and bow / Incuse relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos(?). Good VF, trace of encrustation on reverse. Extremely rare.
The reverse depicts what Johnston interprets as a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos (the earliest Greek map and first physical relief map known) - the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Caister and Maeander, and three mountain ridges (Madranbaba Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). Johnston follows Six in suggesting that the coins were probably struck under the Persian general Memnon at Ephesos, circa 336-334 BC, in order to pay his army after he had captured the city, but before his defeat by Alexander at the Battle of Granicus in 334. However, this theory is still debated and doubted by some scholars, most recently by Leo Mildenberg.

Apameia (AD 193-211) AE 36 - Septimius Severus1003 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE36 (22.99g). Agonotheten Artemas. AVT∙K∙Λ∙CЄΠT - CЄOVHPOC ΠЄP-TI, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / [ЄΠI AΓO]NOΘЄ TO V APTЄMA, in ex. AΠAMЄΩ/N, Noah and his whife standing in enclosing square chest (Latin, arca; Greek, kibotos) with raised lid on which perches a raven (?) right, facing left; floating on waves and inscribed with NΩE; to left, standing figures, as above but full-length, of Noah and spouse, gazing upwards, latter outermost, and raising right hands, elbows bent, in salutation to dove flying right above them, grasping olive-branch in claws. Unpublished (?). Four times holed in antiquity. VF.
The coin is a testimony for the mutual recognition and respect between the Jewish community and the city of Apameia Kibotos, which integrated the Jewish myth of Noah's ark into her own traditions: Noah got ashore with his 'Kibotos' ('chest') at Apameia; the Jewish people of Apameia were descendants of Noah.

The tuna was the sole type on the earliest electrum coinage of Cyzicus, but the relationship between type variety and denomination was inconsistent. In some series a whole tuna indicated a stater and just part of the fish indicated a smaller denomination, but our coin is a stater and shows just the head and the tail of a tuna. In any case all staters of this early period are very rare, and this type seems to be unpublished.
