Sardeis (AD 23-26) AE 27 - Germanicus and Drusus1142 viewsGermanicus and Drusus, Caesars, ca 23-26 AD. AE27 (12.14g), restruck ca 28-29 AD by Asinius Pollio, Proconsul. Drusus and Germanicus seated left in curule chairs / Legend in wreath; ΓΑΙΩ ΑΣΙΝΝΙΩ ΠΟΛΛΙΩΝΙ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΩ around (overstruck on original legend). VF, green patina, slightly rough surfaces.

This interesting coin appears to be an original issue, but in actuality, it is an earlier issue that is restruck with two intricate 'countermarks.' These 'countermarks' were ring-shaped punch restrikings of the legends that surround the obverse and reverse designs. While the obverse 'countermark-legend' is the same as that which appeared on the original striking, the reverse legend, originally ΕΠΙ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΚΛΕΩΝΟΣ ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΟΥ, has been totally replaced by a new 'countermark-legend.'

The attribution of much of the middle Cappadocian series has long been the subject of debate, primarily between B. Simonetta and O. Morkholm. Morkholm's attribtions appear to be more firmly grounded, particularly in hoard studies, and thus his conclusions that the earliest silver drachms are those of Ariarathes V and that the exergual letters on this series are not regnal dates are likely correct. As such, the latest studies and SNGs have attributed this portion of the series following his conclusions.

Alexandreia (BC 171-65) Drachm1116 viewsca 102/1-66/5 BC. AR Drachm (3.60g, 11h). Dated CY 228 (73 BC). Laureate head of Apollo left / Apollo Smintheus standing right, quiver over shoulder, holding bow, arrow, and patera; monogram to inner left, date to inner right, [magistrate’s name in exergue]. Near VF, surface laminations, cleaning marks. Extremely rare denomination for this dated series (Bellinger records only two drachms, in the BM and Berlin, bearing the years 227 and 228, respectively).

This drachm belongs to the period of the city’s autonomy following the devastating defeat of Antiochos III of Syria by the Romans at the battle of Magnesia in 189 BC. Apollo Smintheus is depicted on both sides of the coin, the deity actually being named in the reverse inscription. Apollo Smintheus’ temple lay at Chryse, within the territory of Hamaxitos, one of the cities which had provided the original population of Alexandria. The statue of the god, by the celebrated Parian sculptor and architect Skopas, showed him standing with a mouse at his feet. This particular drachm is part of a series of dated issues that began during the time of Mithradates VI of Pontos (see Callataÿ, pp. 155-9). Consisting primarily of tetradrachms, of which fewer than 40 examples are known, this series was sporadically minted over the course of approximately 50 years. All of these issues bear the same types and monogram, but various magistrates’ names appear in the exergue on their reverses.

There are four emissions in Bodenstedt with this type, emissions 6, 15, 30, and 50. The latter three share common characteristics: there is a crest on the helmet, the bowl is adorned with some ornament, the eye is better formed (rather than a dot), and the seal is below the helmet. None of these characteristics are found on the first emission of this type, which features a helmet without crest, no ornamentation on the bowl, an eye formed of a large dot, and the seal placed to the right of the helmet. Additionally, the incuse on the reverse is also distinctly different from the later emissions.

Smyrna (AD 95) AE 19 - Vespasianus Jr.1093 viewsVespasianus Jr., ca 95 AD. AE 19 (3.29g). OVECΠACIANOC NEΩTEPOC Draped, bare headed bust to r. / ZMYPNAIΩN, Nike to l. holding wreath and palm branch. Extremely rare. Very fine. Ex Münzhandlung Basel; Ex Coll. Jameson 86

Vespasianus Jr. was Titus Flavius Domitianus, son of Flavia Domitilla III. In order to have heirs for his title, Domitian adopted two sons of Flavia Domitilla III who were his great-nephews. They were renamed Vespasianus and Domitianus. Soon, he realized that having potential heirs, meant a potential rival and assassination. So he had the two boys either killed or exiled after executing their father and exiling their mother. This act recoiled on him as he was murdered by Stefanus, the steward of Flavia Domitilla III. There are no known coins bearing a name or portrait for Domitianus Jr., only for Vespasianus Jr. The only locality that issued coins of Vespasian Jr. was Smyrna.

Miletos (AD 14-120) AE 191093 views1st-early 2nd century AD. AE19 (3.15g, 6h). Laureate head right / Cult statue of Apollo Didymaeus standing right, holding stag and bow; star to right. Fine, green patina, earthen deposits. Alighieri Coll.

The imperial portrait coinage from Miletus with title CEBACTOC cannot be precisely assigned to ruler. Some portraits resemble Nero, others Titus, Domitian and Trajan. The portrait on this coin looks much like Tiberius, but the lunate form of “Σ” (i.e., “C”) found on this coin was not in use at Miletus until the reign of Nero.
