Abydos (BC 470-450) AV Stater6855 viewsca 410 BC. AV Stater (8.58g). ABYΔ/HNON (the lower part of the legend retrograde), eagle standing left / Gorgoneion facing, within an incuse square. Light scrape on reverse edge at 5 o’clock. VF/gVF. Unique and of great importance. Ex ‘Kunstfreund’ Coll., Bank Leu AG & Münzen und Medaillen AG (Zurich, 5/1974), lot 161; ex Monnaies et Médailles SA, Auc. 53 (Basel, 11/1977), lot 92.
Abydos was a colony of Miletos, situated on the Hellespont, and was perhaps an early location of the minting of electrum staters in the sixth century B.C. The city had been part of the Athenian empire during the fifth century until it revolted in 411 B.C., becoming a Spartan ally. This incredible gold stater, the only known example, is of the highest numismatic importance.

Abydos (BC 520-490) EL 1/3 Stater4853 viewsca 500 BC. EL Trite - 1/3 Stater (4.66g). Eagle standing left, with closed wings, looking backwards / Rough incuse punch.
Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. Struck on a narrow flan, otherwise aEF.
Attributing uninscribed electrum coins of this period without assured badges is extremely difficult, as is with this trite. Abydos is an obvious possibility since the eagle was a common feature of its coinage. For other common coins see an electrum stater in the British Museum catalogue of Ionia (pl. I, no. 23) (eagle of similar proportions and identical pose, perched upon what is described as a hare). See also some early silver fractions attributed to Abydos with incuse punch reverses (SNG Cop. 1-2; SNG Klein 292), though they show a bird of a different character, without its head reverted.

Abydos (AD 222-235) AE 33 - Severus Alexander1418 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE33 - Medallion (23.00g, 7h). IMP C IMVIP SEV ALEXANDRO AVC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ABΥΔH-NΩ-N, Nude Leander accompanied by Eros with torch, swimming right, crossing the Hellespont (Dardanelles), bust of Hero on top of light tower of Sestos facing left, holding oil lamp in her outstretched right hand to bring light in to the darkness of the night over the Hellespont. Very Fine.
Hero and Leander were one of the most famous lovers in ancient mythology. Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in the city of Sestos (on the Dardanelles). Leander was a young man from Abydos who lived on the opposite Asian side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero, but his parents were against a marriage. He would swim every night across the Hellespont to be with her secretly. Hero always would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide her lover his way. However, one stormy night the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way and drowned. When Hero saw his dead body, she threw herself over the edge of the tower to her death to be with him.
