(BC 500-300) Lead weight - hemihekte643 viewsca 500 BC. Hemihekte lead weight (1.31g, 13.3x8.6mm). Head of Silenos facing / Incuse scallop shell. gVF. Carr coll.

This lead piece appears to be a coin weight for an electrum hemihekte of Phocaic standard. The facing head of Silenos types are commonly found on coins from Sicily, Macedonia, Lesbos, Mysia and Ionia. The scallop shell, while a common type for Italy and Sicily, was used as a control symbol across the Greek world. The weight is appropriate for an electrum hemihekte of standard and type struck in Asia Minor. This appears to be the first recorded specimen, but is consistent with those anticipated by Lang and Crosby, “The Athenian Agora - Volume X: Weights, Measures and Tokens” (1964).

The Spier coin proves the obverse die shows two boar heads confronted; the small flan causes the right handed boar to be lacking. Conceivably, there existed a full stater with the complete type present.

Abydos (BC 470-450) AV Stater6488 viewsca 410 BC. AV Stater (8.58g). ABYΔ/HNON (the lower part of the legend retrograde), eagle standing left / Gorgoneion facing, within an incuse square. Light scrape on reverse edge at 5 o’clock. VF/gVF. Unique and of great importance. Ex ‘Kunstfreund’ Coll., Bank Leu AG & Münzen und Medaillen AG (Zurich, 5/1974), lot 161; ex Monnaies et Médailles SA, Auc. 53 (Basel, 11/1977), lot 92.

Abydos was a colony of Miletos, situated on the Hellespont, and was perhaps an early location of the minting of electrum staters in the sixth century B.C. The city had been part of the Athenian empire during the fifth century until it revolted in 411 B.C., becoming a Spartan ally. This incredible gold stater, the only known example, is of the highest numismatic importance.
469151.jpg
Abydos (BC 520-490) EL 1/3 Stater4630 viewsca 500 BC. EL Trite - 1/3 Stater (4.66g). Eagle standing left, with closed wings, looking backwards / Rough incuse punch.
Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. Struck on a narrow flan, otherwise aEF.

Attributing uninscribed electrum coins of this period without assured badges is extremely difficult, as is with this trite. Abydos is an obvious possibility since the eagle was a common feature of its coinage. For other common coins see an electrum stater in the British Museum catalogue of Ionia (pl. I, no. 23) (eagle of similar proportions and identical pose, perched upon what is described as a hare). See also some early silver fractions attributed to Abydos with incuse punch reverses (SNG Cop. 1-2; SNG Klein 292), though they show a bird of a different character, without its head reverted.

Although Babelon attributes this type to an uncertain mint in Asia Minor, the head of Herakles bears a marked resemblance to that found on the electrum coinage of Erythrai in Ionia.

This curious pale silver issue is struck on the thick, globular flan often associated with late figural electrum. The attribution is uncertain; Schönert-Geiss has published similar specimens as tetrobols of the earliest issues at Maroneia, while find spots seem to indicate an origin in Asia Minor.

The Rosen catalog notes that the entry for the Vourla hoard in IGCH designates Samos as the mint of these coins, but J.P. Barron disagrees. Von Aulock placed the coin at an uncertain mint in Ionia, while Rosen was more general, at an uncertain mint in Asia Minor.

On most examples of this issue, the wing of Pegasos is off the flan, and therefore the type is usually referred to as a horse’s head.

On almost all other examples that have come to auction, or appear in standard references, the wing of the Pegasos is not on the flan, giving the appearance of simply the head of a horse.

There are a variety of published horse's head electrum in various denominations from this general period (eg. Weidauer 141-142), but none have the horse's head facing right. In addition, the style of both the horse and the incuse punch are significantly different from the present coin.
