The obverse die on this coin was also used to strike tetradrachms in the name of Hidrieus. The die sharing and the carry-over from Hiedreius' issues of the small E on the reverse suggest that Pixodaros' tetradrachms were struck early in his reign.

This coin is not only strange as to weight, but the legend. There are only trihemiobols with this rev. design published, and the legend should be Ι−Δ−Ρ−Ι, but this looks like Δ−Ι−Τ. An unpublished denomination? An unknown satrap?

(BC 370) Perikle - 1/6 Stater730 viewsPerikles, ca 380-360 BC. AR Sixth Stater (10mm, 1.18g, 9h). Wedrei mint. Lion right, biting into the hindquarter of a bull crouching left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with sphinx on each side; triskeles to left. EF, toned, minor die break on reverse.

Many late Lycian dynastic coins bear legends on both sides that had long been assumed to be the names of two dynasts, who ostensibly issued joint coinages. However, more recent evidence has proved that names such as Wedrei, Zagaba, and Zemuri are actually names of cities, which are probably the mints of the respective issues they appear on (cf. A.G. Keen, Dynastic Lycia: A Political History of the Lycians & Their Relations with Foreign Powers, c. 545-362 BC [Leiden: Brill, 1998], pp. 109 and 154–5).

Obols and Diobols are well-known from the emission of small coins assigned convincingly to the Carian Satrap Hekatomnos. A. Winzer, Antike Portraitmünzen (2005), No. 13, argues that some portray the Satrap himself, while others Zeus Lepsynos.

It is unlikely that this coin was part of a Persian-related issue at Miletos. In the early 4th century, however, the Milesian stellate pattern reverse was revived in the fractional coinage of the Hekatomnid satraps of Caria that were struck at Mylasa. These coins used the Milesian weight standard, which is likely the reason for their revival of that particular stellate type. There are a variety of issues from Caria during the Persian period that used Persian iconography, so it is likely that this coin belongs among these issues, and perhaps was struck under the Hekatomnids at Mylasa.

(BC 400-370) Artumpara - Stater672 viewsArtumpara, Dynast, ca 400-370 BC. AR Stater (7.62g, 9h), Telmessos mint. ΤΛ[...], bearded head of Satrap right, wearing Persian tiara / ΑΡΤΟΧΠΑΡΑ, helmeted head of Athena right. Extremely rare, one of only a very few coins of this Dynast known. Good fine. PGB coll., acquired in early 1970s.

Artumpara was a late satrap or dynast of Lycia who was involved in putting down the revolt of Datames; he himself seems to have been defeated by Perikle, who at one point ruled over most of Lycia.

(BC 400-370) Artumpara - Stater417 viewsArttumpara, Dynast, ca 390-370 BC. AR Stater (21mm, 8.40g, 4h). Xanthos mint(?). Forepart of lion right / Helmeted head of Athena right; diskeles above; all in dotted circle within incuse circle. Good VF, toned, struck with worn obverse die. Very rare.

Although this issue is anepigraphic, the present and Roma coins are struck from the same obverse die as SNG Copenhagen Supp. 457 = SNG von Aulock 4183, which has a reverse that bears Arttumpara’s name. It should be noted - this obverse die appears to have had details reengraved before striking the present piece.
