Temenothyrai (AD 253-268) AE 38 - Gallienus976 viewsGallienus, 253-268 AD. AE38 / Medallion (18.51g, 6h). Titianus, archiereus. AV • KA • ΠO • ΛIKI • GAΛΛIHNOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right, wearing aegis / TITIANOC APXIE–PEVC, THMENOΘV •/PEVCIN • in two lines in exergue, monumental ornate conical cult-image on cart drawn left by yoke of oxen; before, guide standing right, steadying oxen and directing to three figures above, standing right, and two figures behind, each of whom holds a guide rope. EF, green and red patina with earthen overtones. Extremely rare. The pompa, or procession, was a prominent part of the religious festivals and games of the Greco-Roman world. Often opening the associated games or accompanying the sacrifices, monumental images of the deity would be publicly conveyed (Ovid, Trist. 4.2-3, 6). Such was the Roman pompa circensis which preceded the games in the circus and was part of the celebration of a triumph. Likewise, the inception of a new consulship occasioned celebrations which also would have included the display of such images. Some such event must have been the occasion for the pompa depicted on this medallion, though a more specific event is as yet unknown. The archierus mentioned may be the Junius Titianus who was consul with Philip I in AD 245 (Cod. Theod. 6.39.2).33333

Kibyra (AD 147-175) AE 35 - Faustina Jr.911 viewsFaustina Jr., wife of Marcus Aurelius. Augusta, 147-175 AD. AE35 (22.56g, 6h). Homonoia with Hierapolis. Claudius Philocles, magistrate. FAVCTEI NA CEBACTH, draped bust R, hair tied back in chignon / KIBVPATWN K IERAPOLITWN EPI KL FILOKLEOC OMONOIA, female figure, draped and veiled, holding two children, standing R before Zeus, enthroned L, who holds Pegasus in outstretched R hand and sceptre in L. EF, dark brown patina, flan flaws on reverse and edge. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex CNG 63 (5/2003), lot 1015.

The identity of the female on rev is uncertain in references; Franke & Nolle describe her as Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis; BMC simple calls her a goddess. Neither describe Pegasus being held by Zeus, and this may be the clue to her identity and the relevance of the scene. Pegasus, born of Medusa and tamed by Bellerophon, later throws off his mortal master and ascends to heaven, where he becomes the horse of Zeus and symbol of immortality, associated with the apotheosis of semi-divine mortals. The veiled female figure may be Faustina herself, presenting to Zeus her twin children, Aelius Aurelius and Aurelius Antoninus, who died shortly after their birth in 149.

Otrus was one of the five cities of the Eucarpic plain and may have been named Otrus after an emigration from Otroea in Bythinia, which according to Strabo (XII, 566) was founded by Otreus, the king of Phrygia of the time of the Trojan War.

Prymnessos (AD 240-260) AE 24577 viewsImperial Times, mid-3rd century AD. AE24 (7.30g, 7h). Draped bust of King Midas right, wearing Phrygian cap / Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and sceptre. Good VF, black-green patina with lighter green overtones, small hairline flan crack. A rare mythological type. Ex Drewry Coll.

Midas, the mytho-historical king of Phrygia and Lydia, was granted the so-called "Golden Touch" by Dionysus because the king wished for unending wealth as a reward for his guest-friendship to Silenus. Everything Midas touched turned to gold, including food. Starving and pleading for relief, the king was instructed to bathe in the waters of the river Pactolus. The water removed Midas’ “gift” and turned the sand of the river-bed into grains of gold. It was the naturally-occuring ore of the Pactolus that became the source of the metal used in the first archaic electrum coinages of Asia Minor.

The assignment at 'Dorylaion' goes back to Imhoof Blumer. H. von Aulock, Phrygien II, 63 puts the coin without explanation after Hierapolis. Bloesch, Winterthur notes a handwritten note by Imhoof Blumer that remarks of Phrygian Dorieion, which has no known coinage (neither the Winterthurer nor the available piece show a "Y" at the end of the legend, actually also "I" is possible).

Apameia (AD 193-211) AE 35 - Septimius Severus683 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE35 (22.76g). ΑΥΤ Κ Λ CЄΠΤ - CЄΟΥΗΡΟC ΠЄΡ-ΤΙ, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right / ЄPI AGWNOQ-î-T-OU ARTî MA/Γ / APAMЄIΩN, Athena, wearing long chiton and peplos, seated left on rock, shield at her side, helmeted head turned right, playing double aulos and checking her image reflected in the water; she is watched by Marsyas, nude, hidden behind rock in upper left field. Very rare and interesting mythological representation. Dark, olive patina.

Athena was believed to have invented the aulos (double pipe). Hera and Aphrodite laughed when Athena played her pipes because her puffed cheeks distorted her face. Suspicious Athena decided to see for herself by observing her reflection in a river as she played. Upon seeing the unflattering result, she discarded the pipes, which were then picked up by Marsyas; Marsyas later challenged Apollo to a contest, matching his pipes with Apollo's lyre. Apollo won and flayed Marsyas as his punishment.
