Tarsos (BC 425-400) Stater1207 viewsca 425-400 BC. AR Stater (10.35g). Bellerophon riding Pegasos left, spearing Chimera below / The God Nergal, standing left and holding axe, ear of corn to left, small tree to right, 'NRGL-TRZ' = Nergal? Tarsos in Aramaic characters above. Extremely rare and interesting. Attractive dark tone, EF. Ex NAC Sale 10 (1997), lot 253.

Nergal was a fearsome Mesopotamian god associated with death; he reigned in the underworld and was the protector of men against pestilence and war. His name survives not only on coinage, but on Akkadian and Elamite inscriptions, and seemingly also in the names of high-ranking Assyrian officials and a Babylonian king of the early 7th cent. BC, Nergal-ushezib. The small tree may be the "sacred tree" that is often the focal point of ceremonies depicted on Neo-Assyrian reliefs and seals.

Nikaia (BC 47-46) AE 24 - Julius Caesar1646 viewsJulius Caesar, 47/6 BC. AE24 - Assarion (8.38g, 11h). C. Vibius Pansa, proconsul. Dated CY 236 (47/6 BC). Bare head of Caesar right / ΓAIOY down right field, OYBIOY / ΠANΣA down left, Nike advancing right, holding wreath in extended right hand and palm over left shoulder; monograms to left and right; VΛΣ (date) in exergue. Near VF, black patina. Ex Drewry Coll.

This type was the first anywhere to feature the portrait of Julius Caesar. C. Vibius Pansa was part of the Caesarian faction at Rome, and probably owed his proconsulship to his patron. The only other definite lifetime portrait of Caesar from the provincial series was an issue of ca 45 BC at Lampsacus (RPC I 2268-9). Both of these issues preceded the earliest appearance of his portrait at Rome, on the denarii of M. Mettius in January 44 BC.

Parion (BC 165-160) Tetradrachm1320 viewsca 165-160 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.61g, 40mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / ΑΠΟΛΛΟΝΩΣ - ΑΚΤΑΙΟΥ, Apollo Actaeus standing left, holding laurel branch in right hand and resting left on grounded bow; ΔΙ ligate over altar to left, monogram to right, ΠΑΡΙΑΝΩΝ in exergue. Very broad flan, aEF. Extremely rare, only few specimens known.

The only Parion Hellenistic tetradrachms known, until recently, was the extremely rare issue showing veiled head of Demeter on obv. and Apollo Actaeus on rev. holding a phiale above a lighted alter, his left hand resting on a lyre placed on the omphalos, SNG Lewis 829, SNG France 1401 (both broken); L. Robert, Monnaies antiques en Troade, Paris, 1966, p. 43, f. This new and until very recently unrecorded issue was published by A.R. Meadows, NC 1998, pp 42-46. He compares both issues to the coinage of Alexandria Troas and determined that the tetradrachm Apollo/Apollo should be dated at around 165-143 and the tetradrachm Demeter / Apollo at a later date.
