Abydos (BC 470-450) AV Stater6496 viewsca 410 BC. AV Stater (8.58g). ABYΔ/HNON (the lower part of the legend retrograde), eagle standing left / Gorgoneion facing, within an incuse square. Light scrape on reverse edge at 5 o’clock. VF/gVF. Unique and of great importance. Ex ‘Kunstfreund’ Coll., Bank Leu AG & Münzen und Medaillen AG (Zurich, 5/1974), lot 161; ex Monnaies et Médailles SA, Auc. 53 (Basel, 11/1977), lot 92.

Abydos was a colony of Miletos, situated on the Hellespont, and was perhaps an early location of the minting of electrum staters in the sixth century B.C. The city had been part of the Athenian empire during the fifth century until it revolted in 411 B.C., becoming a Spartan ally. This incredible gold stater, the only known example, is of the highest numismatic importance.

Abydos (BC 520-490) EL 1/3 Stater4637 viewsca 500 BC. EL Trite - 1/3 Stater (4.66g). Eagle standing left, with closed wings, looking backwards / Rough incuse punch.
Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. Struck on a narrow flan, otherwise aEF.

Attributing uninscribed electrum coins of this period without assured badges is extremely difficult, as is with this trite. Abydos is an obvious possibility since the eagle was a common feature of its coinage. For other common coins see an electrum stater in the British Museum catalogue of Ionia (pl. I, no. 23) (eagle of similar proportions and identical pose, perched upon what is described as a hare). See also some early silver fractions attributed to Abydos with incuse punch reverses (SNG Cop. 1-2; SNG Klein 292), though they show a bird of a different character, without its head reverted.

Tenedos (BC 490-480) Didrachm3103 viewsca 490-480 BC. Didrachm (8.94g, 9h). Janiform head: bearded male face to left and female face to right, both have archaic, almond-shaped facing eyes and wear a stephane, and share a disc earring with a rosette pattern and a double-curved pendant; necklace of pearls on neck / TENE (retrograde), helmeted and bearded male head left, wearing pearl necklace; all within incuse square. Extremely rare. Lightly toned and of superb late Archaic-early Classical style; a magnificent coin of great beauty. Slightly porous surfaces, nearly EF.

The early coinage of Tenedos is quite complex, and seems to begin in the last quarter of 6th century BC with didrachms that bear a male/female janiform head and a double axe on the reverse. This early coinage seems to have been replaced by a much rarer second coinage, of which the present piece is the finest known. The axe was replaced by the helmeted head of a warrior (assuming the heads on the obverse are divinities, this could be Tenes). The great similarity to issues of Lampsakos probably convinced the Tenedos authorities to return to their earlier double axe reverse type. The dating of this coin is based on similarity in style to late archaic issues of Athens (Starr Group I).

Kebren (BC 520-480) EL 1/24 Stater2342 viewsLate 6th-early 5th centuries BC. EL 1/24 Stater (7mm, 0.69g). Head of ram left / Incuse square punch. Gemini VII, lot 496, otherwise, unpublished. Good VF, light scuff on obverse.

Although there are a few electrum issues known with a ram’s head (cf. Weidauer 50-1 and Boston MFA 1756), all are distinctly different in style from this coin. At the same time, the style of the ram’s head here is a perfect match to the type found on the early silver issues at Kebren (cf. Rosen 531). SNG von Aulock 7775 and NY Sale XX, lot 197 appear to be hektes with this same style.
73000299.jpg
Gergis (BC 480-450) Hemidrachm2186 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.07g, 6h). Sphinx seated right / Gorgoneion in circular incuse. VF, toned, granular surfaces, irregular flan. Extremely rare, apparently the third known.

In the early-mid 5th century BC, Abydos and Kebren used a very similar reverse type on their coinages, paired with their civic badge on the obverse, an eagle (Abydos) and ram’s head (Kebren). Kebren’s coins of this type typically do not include the city ethnic. The present coin employs the city’s badge, a sphinx, on the obverse, a stylistically similar gorgoneion on the reverse, and no ethnic. The existence of now 3 cities in the Troad striking common coinage suggests that there may have been a monetary alliance or symmachy in existence among them. While it is possible that this coin was minted by another city, the fabric and overall style are consistent with the early coins of Abydos and Kebren. Further, the present coin appeared on the market alongside an early coin of Gergis with a clear ethnic.

Alexandreia (BC 171-65) Didrachm2165 viewsca 102/1-66/5 BC. AR Didrachm (27mm, 6.98g, 12h). Archagoros, magistrate. Dated CY 199 (102/101 BC). Laureate head of Apollo left / Apollo Smintheus standing right, quiver over shoulder, holding bow, arrow, and patera; monogram to inner left, date to inner right, [magistrate’s name in exergue]. VF, broken and repaired (3h obv./9h rev.) without affecting design. Extremely rare - perhaps the only known didrachm from this series.

This coin is part of a series of dated issues that began during the time of Mithradates VI of Pontos (see Callataÿ, pp. 155-9). Consisting primarily of tetradrachms, of which fewer than 40 examples are known, this series was sporadically minted over the course of approximately 50 years. All of these issues bear the same types and monogram, but various magistrates’ names appear in the exergue on their reverses.

The earliest coins of Alexandria are bronze issues struck about 300 BC imitating Hamaxitus (Apollo Smitheus) and Hamandria (Apollo/horse feeding). The earliest silver attributable to Alexandria are tetradrachms ca 280-275 in the name of Alexander, which on grounds of style belong to the years after the death of Lysimachus (Price 1588-1590). During the Second Syrian War (260-253) Antiochus II produced an issue of tetradrachms (SNG Spaer 374-376). Another two issues in the name of Alexander followed ca 230 (Price 1591), and again in 189-180 (Price 1592-1598). At some point during the 3rd century BC, an extensive bronze issue was produced (BMC 7-21), to which this previously unknown silver stater belongs, based on the local Persian silver weight standard, obviously intended for local use.

Kebren (BC 450) Hemidrachm1631 viewsca 480 BC. AR Hemidrachm (1.78g). Head of ram right; below, lizard right / Forepart of bull right within incuse square. Good VF, toned. Well struck on good metal. Ex Triton VI (1/2003), lot 390; Leu 42 (5/1987), lot 294; Niggeler Coll. (Leu/Münzen und Medaillen, 12/1965), lot 396; R. Jameson Coll., 2295.

The Boston and Jameson catalogs attributed this type to Samos, although Barron did not include this coinage in his corpus of Samian coinage. Presumably, the earlier catalogs’ attribution was based on the parallel of the reverse type to various issues at Samos. The obverse type, however, with its small lizard control device, stands in contrast to such an attribution, and without further evidence, an attribution to Samos must be viewed as speculative.

The location of this issue is based on the ethnic, but the style places it a at least a half century before the accepted date for the earliest coinage of Gargara.

Second known hekte of this type. At the same time, the style of the ram’s head here is a perfect match to the type found on the early silver issues at Kebren (cf. SNG Ashmolean 1076–7). See SNG Kayhan 1565 and CNG 90 (5/2012), lot 577 for myshemihektes of the same style and standard, but with head left.” CNG have since sold a hemihekte of the same style and standard [see CNG 105 (5/2017) lot 225]. The reverse of this example is very different from the CNG examples.

Abydos (AD 222-235) AE 33 - Severus Alexander1329 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE33 - Medallion (23.00g, 7h). IMP C IMVIP SEV ALEXANDRO AVC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ABΥΔH-NΩ-N, Nude Leander accompanied by Eros with torch, swimming right, crossing the Hellespont (Dardanelles), bust of Hero on top of light tower of Sestos facing left, holding oil lamp in her outstretched right hand to bring light in to the darkness of the night over the Hellespont. Very Fine.

Hero and Leander were one of the most famous lovers in ancient mythology. Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in the city of Sestos (on the Dardanelles). Leander was a young man from Abydos who lived on the opposite Asian side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero, but his parents were against a marriage. He would swim every night across the Hellespont to be with her secretly. Hero always would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide her lover his way. However, one stormy night the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way and drowned. When Hero saw his dead body, she threw herself over the edge of the tower to her death to be with him.

Alexandreia (BC 171-65) Drachm1049 viewsca 102/1-66/5 BC. AR Drachm (3.60g, 11h). Dated CY 228 (73 BC). Laureate head of Apollo left / Apollo Smintheus standing right, quiver over shoulder, holding bow, arrow, and patera; monogram to inner left, date to inner right, [magistrate’s name in exergue]. Near VF, surface laminations, cleaning marks. Extremely rare denomination for this dated series (Bellinger records only two drachms, in the BM and Berlin, bearing the years 227 and 228, respectively).

This drachm belongs to the period of the city’s autonomy following the devastating defeat of Antiochos III of Syria by the Romans at the battle of Magnesia in 189 BC. Apollo Smintheus is depicted on both sides of the coin, the deity actually being named in the reverse inscription. Apollo Smintheus’ temple lay at Chryse, within the territory of Hamaxitos, one of the cities which had provided the original population of Alexandria. The statue of the god, by the celebrated Parian sculptor and architect Skopas, showed him standing with a mouse at his feet. This particular drachm is part of a series of dated issues that began during the time of Mithradates VI of Pontos (see Callataÿ, pp. 155-9). Consisting primarily of tetradrachms, of which fewer than 40 examples are known, this series was sporadically minted over the course of approximately 50 years. All of these issues bear the same types and monogram, but various magistrates’ names appear in the exergue on their reverses.

Apparently unpublished. The only other example of the type I could find is from a Gorny & Mosch auction. That example weight 2.87g and is attributed as a hemidrachm. One could argue that it is a tetrobol based on the standards used at Ilion at the time. This would then be a diobol.
