Tarsos in Aramaic characters above. Extremely rare and interesting. Attractive dark tone, EF. Ex NAC Sale 10 (1997), lot 253.

Nergal was a fearsome Mesopotamian god associated with death; he reigned in the underworld and was the protector of men against pestilence and war. His name survives not only on coinage, but on Akkadian and Elamite inscriptions, and seemingly also in the names of high-ranking Assyrian officials and a Babylonian king of the early 7th cent. BC, Nergal-ushezib. The small tree may be the "sacred tree" that is often the focal point of ceremonies depicted on Neo-Assyrian reliefs and seals.

Aigeai (AD 216-217) Tetradrachm921 viewsTime of Caracalla, 211-217 AD. Billon Tetradrachm (11.80g). About 216-217. AIΓEAIΩN ANTΩNIINO VΠOΛEΩC Bearded, draped bust of Asclepius r., thin band in the hair, snake-entwined staff at his l. shoulder / MAKEΔONIKHC ΠICTHC ΘEOΦIΛO, Octastyle temple of Asclepius on steps, statue of Asclepius within, wearing himation, holding snake-entwined staff; in the pediment, eagle flying l.; in the field, date Γ-Σ/C (= year 263 of the local era); below, goat r. between two pellets. For a similar tetradrachm honoring likewise Asclepius, see Prieur 86, 723 and H. Bloesch, Caracalla in Aigeai, Atti (Proceedings) Congresso Internazionale di Numismatica, Roma 1961 (1965), 307 seq. Unique, unpublished and very interesting type. Very fine.

The sanctuary of Asclepius in Aegeae was certainly not as famous as the ones in Epidaurus, Kos or Pergamum, but still well known. The rather unusual use of base silver for these rare autonomous issues (dated 262 and 263 of the local era = AD 215/216 ans 216-217) as well as their types refer to an illness of Caracalla and of his attempt of being healed by visiting sanctuaries of Asclepius such as Pergamum and probably Aegeae.

Satrap on horseback galloping right / Naked hoplite kneeling left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, holding spear in right hand, large round shield decorated with gorgoneion in left, 'TRZ' in Aramaic to right. Toned VF, light porosity.

The hereditary kings of Cilicia were invested with the name Syennesis, a royal title more than an actual name. Syennesis III was probably the grandson of Syennesis II, one of the commanders in the fleet of Xerxes, and married a woman named Epyaxa. In 401 BC, the couple supported the revolt of Cyrus II against his brother Artaxerxes II. In return for the assistance, including a body of troops commanded by his son which he offered to Cyrus, Syennesis was himself richly rewarded with gifts and honors. At the same time, though, he sent his other son to Artaxerxes, so that whatever the outcome he might be with the winning side. Syennesis' actions, however, did little to save Cilicia's independence; after 400 BC, it became a satrapy of the Persian Empire.

Isaura was the chief city of the region of Isauria, which became part of the province of Cilicia in Severan times. Isaura gained the honorific of Metropolis at some point in this period, and all its Severan coinage has this title. This coin must pre-date the union of the provinces and the elevation of Isaura. The Hercules head is a precise rendition of the type used by Alexander the great, while the identity of the lion rider has remained a mystery since the coin was first published in 1896.

Anazarbos (BC 15-AD 19) AE 31 - Germanicus824 viewsGermanicus, Caesar, 15 BC-19 AD. AE31 - Diassarion (17.72g, 12h). Dated CY 67 (48/9 AD). Bare head right / Laureate head of Zeus Olybris right before mountain with acropolis; ETOYΣ ZΞ (date) in exergue. Near EF, dark green patina, minor adjustment marks on reverse. A great portrait and highly interesting reverse type. Group CEM.

RPC gives three possible identifications for the figure on the obverse: Claudius, Britannicus, and Germanicus. Britannicus is the most easily dismissable attribution; as RPC notes (p. 595) the nomenclature would be unlikely for such a date. Levante and Ziegler describe the figure as Claudius (the latter with a question mark), but the varying portrait style and the obverse legend “TIBERIOC KΛAΔIOC KAICAP” on a parellel issue of the same year casts serious doubt. Germanicus then seems the most likely.
