Draped bust right / Venus standing right, leaning on cippus, holding helmet and sceptre. Near VF, toned. Rare. Ex CNG 60 (5/2002), lot 1630. While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style, legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis point to Rome, suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital and then sent to Asia for local use.

Extremely rare; the only coin in Bodenstedt's corpus illustrated with a line drawing! Bodenstedt identifies the device below the seal as a theta, but there is no evidence it is a letter.

Very rare. Virtually as struck. Ex Gemini I (1/2005), 162 and Lanz 102 (5/2001), 267, and from the collections of The Johns Hopkins University and J. W. The letter delta on the obverse is the denomination mark and stands for four diobols or an octobol (smaller pieces valued at two and four obols are also known). These coins were primarily for local use at the time when the city produced its extensive issues of stephanophoric tetradrachms.

The Rosen catalog notes that the entry for the Vourla hoard in IGCH designates Samos as the mint of these coins, but J.P. Barron disagrees. Von Aulock placed the coin at an uncertain mint in Ionia, while Rosen was more general, at an uncertain mint in Asia Minor.

The small seal above the head was off the flan in Copenhagen, missed by Münzen und Medaillen and the type was not known to Bodenstedt.

Attis was of Phrygian origin and thus he is always represented in a Phrygian costume such as he wears here. He was the Phrygian god of vegetation and consort of the mother-goddess Cybele.
