The reverse of this Soloi stater ranks among the most inventive of all Greek coinage. On the eareliest coins of Soloi the customary grape cluster was set into an incuse square as was the norm at most mints in the mid-5th century BC. Here we have a much later coin referencing the by-then-obsolete feature by placing the grape cluster in a shallow incuse surrounded by a raised field that is adorned with the ethnic and a vine leaf. To make this uncommon treatment all the more remarkable, the distinction between the raised outer shelf and the sunken square is bridged by a stem that joins the grape cluster to the vine leaf.

Karia Uncertain (BC 500-490) Stater614 viewsca 500-490 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 14.54g). Two dolphins right within linear square border / Two rectangular incuses. VF, toned, light porosity. Extremely rare issue with both dolphins right, only the von Aulock specimen published.

This coinage had originally been attributed to Poseidion on Karpathos, but Cahn’s analysis of the issues bearing an inscription, πos, has conclusively shown that this legend is not an ethnic and cannot point to a mint in Poseidion. It is most likely struck from a mint on the coast of Caria or one of the other mints that used this form of double rectangular incuse: Ialysos, Kamiros, or Lindos.
