Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion - EL 1/21768 viewsca 600 BC. EL Hemistater (8.35g). Phokaian standard. Figural type. Head of roaring lion right / Irregular incuse. Good VF. Unique.

While this coin appears to belong to Wiedauer's Series XLIII (lion head), the style of both the lion and the incuse are somewhat different. In particular, the incuses on the Wiedauer coins are shallower and have rough irregular patterns in relief. The incuse on the present coin is much deeper and has a smooth surface that flows to varying depths. Although these differences suggest this coin belongs to another series or issue, it is also possible, because there are no published hemistaters of this type, that this coin represents the norm for this particular denomination.

This medallion present a traditional view of the staging of the adventus, the ceremony honoring the emperor as he enters a host city. Caracalla is in the imperial chariot, proceded by the herald announcing his arrival. The captives and the trophy could be either a premonition of the expected victory over the Persians, or could represent the skirmishes with the border tribes that occupied the army as he passed through Thrace.

Nikaia (BC 47-46) AE 24 - Julius Caesar1646 viewsJulius Caesar, 47/6 BC. AE24 - Assarion (8.38g, 11h). C. Vibius Pansa, proconsul. Dated CY 236 (47/6 BC). This type was the first anywhere to feature the portrait of Julius Caesar. C. Vibius Pansa was part of the Caesarian faction at Rome, and probably owed his proconsulship to his patron. The only other definite lifetime portrait of Caesar from the provincial series was an issue of ca 45 BC at Lampsacus (RPC I 2268-9). Both of these issues preceded the earliest appearance of his portrait at Rome, on the denarii of M. Mettius in January 44 BC.

Ex Münzen und Medaillen Deutschland 11 (11/2002), lot 676; Bayerische Vereinsbank Münzschätze FPL 11 (4/1976), no. 32.

With the exception of the coinage of Mithradates VI ‘the Great’, the coins of the earlier Pontic kings are very rare, and only a handful of drachms are known. As noted by Mørkholm in EHC, the portraits of these Pontic kings are among the most striking and lifelike in all of Greek royal portrait coinage. Unlike many other series, such as the Ptolemies and Seleukids, the portraits here are not idealized, portraying their subjects “warts and all.” Only some of the coins of the early Greco-Baktrian kings have such lovely die workmanship, but the character displayed in these Pontic portraits is unparalleled.

(BC 284-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm1635 viewsPhiletairos I, 284-263 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.70g). Diademed head of Seleukos I right / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, holding shield and spear, ivy leaf before, bow behind, A on throne. Good VF, reverse a little rough, with scrapes and light graffiti. Rare.

When Lysimachos established the mint of Pergamon, he entrusted its treasury to the eunuch Philetairos. In the latter 280s BC, Philetairos changed his allegiance to Seleukos I. Shortly thereafter in 281 BC, Lysimachos was defeated by Seleukos at the Battle of Korupedion. Although Seleukos was assassinated the following year, Philetairos continued to acknowledge Seleukid primacy. This coinage, commemorating Seleukos I, was struck while Pergamon was still loyal to the Seleukids, under their king Antiochos I. Houghton & Lorber (SC), citing Le Rider and Newell, assign this coinage to the aftermath of Antiochos' victory over the Galatians, circa 269/8 BC.

Kebren (BC 450) Hemidrachm1630 viewsca 480 BC. AR Hemidrachm (1.78g). Head of ram right; below, lizard right / Forepart of bull right within incuse square. Good VF, toned. Well struck on good metal. Ex Triton VI (1/2003), lot 390; Leu 42 (5/1987), lot 294; Niggeler Coll. (Leu/Münzen und Medaillen, 12/1965), lot 396; R. Jameson Coll., 2295.

The Boston and Jameson catalogs attributed this type to Samos, although Barron did not include this coinage in his corpus of Samian coinage. Presumably, the earlier catalogs’ attribution was based on the parallel of the reverse type to various issues at Samos. The obverse type, however, with its small lizard control device, stands in contrast to such an attribution, and without further evidence, an attribution to Samos must be viewed as speculative.

Ionia Uncertain (BC 625-550) Geometric - EL 1/481609 viewsca 625-600 BC. EL 1/48 Stater (5mm, 0.27g). Milesian standard. Geometric type. Pellet in center of linear diamond shape within linear rectangle; striations in outer margins / Incuse square punch. VF.

The pellet within the diamond shape on the obverse is similar to the depiction of the eye on some early schematic lion head issues (cf. Weidauer 122 and Elektron II 26). It is therefore possible that these coins constitute a new denomination for that series.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-1599 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.46g, 11mm). Female head (Leda ?) right, hair coiled / Head of Nike right, hair bound with a taenia, N-I/K-[A], all within linear square. VF, very rare with only three known. Unknown in standard references. Carr coll.

A very rare coin of considerable interest. The obverse has a die match with Bodenstedt 82 which he described as being the head of Leda. That obverse die only known by that single specimen noted by Bodenstadt which has a reverse of a swan. The reverse of this coin is Nike. At the time of sale, only three specimens known of this type. The inscription is not complete on any of the three specimens known but as a combination it is clear that the letters are N-I/K-A. Silvia Hurter in her article, on the first of the specimens known, notes that the inscription makes it clear that the reverse is that of Nike and it can be inferred that this coin was struck to commemorate a victory, but which is uncertain (see Die Nike von Mytilene: Eine anonyme Siegespragung, SM 202, June 2001, pp. 21-22).
