This coin pairs an obverse die from the earlier series (reverse in a square pelleted border) with a reverse from the later series (reverse in a circular pelleted border). The artwork is particularly good, which also suggests an earlier, rather than later, issue.

The coinage of Tarsus, like that of the Antioch mint, gives exceptionally full titles for Hadrian, as can be witnessed on this and the previous lot. Here we find an interesting detail in the titles of Sabina as well. The AY can only stand for Augusta, which is quite redundant as the legend also names her the Greek equivalent Σεβαστή.

Good VF, attractive dark iridescent toning. Extremely rare, one of two known (the other in the Vatican collection cited by Imhoof-Blumer).

The traditional view of this denomination as a drachm has been challenged by Meadows, who believes that during this period at Stratonikeia their drachm was roughly equal to the Roman quinarius (1.8g). As such, he labels this type as a didrachm, but we have retained traditional attribution for clarity.
