Kyzikos (BC 460-400) EL Stater2185 viewsca 460-400 BC. EL Stater (15.97g, 12h). Warrior, nude but for crested Corinthian helmet, kneeling right, checking the straightness of his arrow, bow hung over his left wrist; tunny downward behind / Quadripartite incuse punch. VF.

This type is part of a sub-series of Kyzikene staters that depict a warrior, in this case an archer, in the various stages of preparing his equipment for battle (Von Fritze I 115-117). It is not known whether this sub-series depicts any particular hero from mythology.

Gergis (BC 480-450) Hemidrachm2184 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.07g, 6h). Sphinx seated right / Gorgoneion in circular incuse. VF, toned, granular surfaces, irregular flan. Extremely rare, apparently the third known.

In the early-mid 5th century BC, Abydos and Kebren used a very similar reverse type on their coinages, paired with their civic badge on the obverse, an eagle (Abydos) and ram’s head (Kebren). Kebren’s coins of this type typically do not include the city ethnic. The present coin employs the city’s badge, a sphinx, on the obverse, a stylistically similar gorgoneion on the reverse, and no ethnic. The existence of now 3 cities in the Troad striking common coinage suggests that there may have been a monetary alliance or symmachy in existence among them. While it is possible that this coin was minted by another city, the fabric and overall style are consistent with the early coins of Abydos and Kebren. Further, the present coin appeared on the market alongside an early coin of Gergis with a clear ethnic.

Laureate head of Apollo left / Apollo Smintheus standing right, quiver over shoulder, holding bow, arrow, and patera; monogram to inner left, date to inner right, [magistrate’s name in exergue]. VF, broken and repaired (3h obv./9h rev.) without affecting design. Extremely rare - perhaps the only known didrachm from this series.

This coin is part of a series of dated issues that began during the time of Mithradates VI of Pontos (see Callataÿ, pp. 155-9). Consisting primarily of tetradrachms, of which fewer than 40 examples are known, this series was sporadically minted over the course of approximately 50 years. All of these issues bear the same types and monogram, but various magistrates’ names appear in the exergue on their reverses.

Ephesos (BC 88-86) AV Stater2064 viewsca 88-86 BC. AV Stater (8.45g, 12h). Bust of Artemis right, wearing stephane; bow and quiver over shoulder / ΕΦΕ-ΣΙΩ[Ν], cult statue of Artemis Ephesia facing; bee in field to left. VF. Very rare. Ex Leu 22 (1979), 132; Numismatic Fine Arts 2 (1976), 209 and Kastner 4 (1973), 110.

Since 133 BC, Ephesos belonged to the Roman province of Asia and suffered from the shameless exploitation of the Roman tax collector. In 88 BC, the city revolted and went over to Mithridates VI of Pontos, who, in the so-called Asiatic Vespers, massacred thousands of Roman citizens. To pay his mercenaries, Mithradates struck large quantities of gold staters of traditional Ephesian types, but few specimens exist today.

(BC 280-250) Nikomedes I - Tetradrachm2033 viewsNikomedes I, ca 280-250 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.57g, 11h), Nikomedia mint, struck ca 260-250 BC. Diademed head right / Bendis seated right, holding two spears; shield below; to outer left, Nike advancing left. Good VF, toned, minor porosity. One of approximately six known, and apparently the only specimen in private hands. One of the greatest rarities among the important early Hellenistic portrait coins.

Nikomedes brought the dreaded Galatians or Gauls into Asia Minor. With their help, he extended his hitherto landlocked kingdom to the coast of the Propontis, where he established his new capital of Nikomedia. He was the first of his dynasty to issue coins. Nikomedes' tetradrachms exhibit an exceptional Hellenistic portrait. This is the only specimen not in a museum collection; Berlin, Vienna, and the BM each have one example, Paris (BN) has two. All have the same reverse type of Bendis (the Thracian Artemis) seated, though only Berlin and the present piece do not have the additional monogram in the inner left field.

Kyzikos (BC 398-395) Tetradrachm - Pharnabazos2028 viewsPharnabazos, Persian Satrap and military commander, ca 398-396/5 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.67g, 2h). ΦAR-N-[A]-BA, head of Pharnabazos right, weaing satrapal cap tied below his chin, and diadem / Ornate ship’s prow left, decorated with a griffin and prophylactic eye; before and aft, two dolphins downward; below, tunny left. Good VF, toned, slightly granular surface. Very rare, Maffre located thirteen extant examples, eight of which are in museum collections. Ex Giessener Münzhandlung 69 (11/1994), lot 276a.

Struck during the period of warfare between Spartans and Persians, this issue commenced after Pharnabazos received the responsibility for the management of the Achaemenid navy in 398 BC, and ended with the temporary closure of the mint in 396 BC due to the Spartan presence in the area. Maffre's die study suggests that, although only 13 examples are known today, the coinage was quite massive and instrumental in facilitating Pharnabazos' naval success that culminated in the Battle of Knidos.

Uncertain Satrap (BC 350-341) Tetradrachm2017 viewsAchaemenid Period, ca 350-334 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.10g, 5h), struck ca 350-341 BC in Caria? Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, drawing bow / Satrap on horseback right, thrusting spear. VF, attractive dark iridescent toning, flat strike. Rare. Ex CNG 36 (12/1995), lot 2079; Spink America (5/1995), lot 230; Pixodarus Hoard, 23.

The archer-horseman tetradrachms are one of the most enigmatic Persian coinages struck in Asia Minor prior to the invasion of Alexander the Great. Though various symbols and letters occur in the fields, no inscription exists to help us identify the issuer, mint, or purpose of issue. Konuk, however, identified two series, with and without subsidiary symbols on the reverse. Also, analysis of the Pixodarus Hoard has allowed the coinage to be dated from the decade beginning circa 350 BC. Additionally, as only the earlier, non-symbol, type is represented, Meadows concluded that the date of deposit of the hoard, 341 BC, served as a tentative divider between the two series.

Phokaia (BC 600-522) EL 1/6 Stater1995 viewsca 525 BC. EL Hekte (2.57g). Head of eagle to left with frontal eye and hooked beak; dotted neck truncation; below, seal swimming to left / Irregular incuse square. Unpublished. Of great rarity, the finest of the 3 examples known. Good EF.

This exceptional piece, which was unknown to Bodenstedt, should date to the late 6th century (Bodenstedt’s dates are generally thought to be somewhat high). For a similar but slightly later eagle head, see the later issues of Cypriot Paphos (as ACGC 1088 and Traité II, 1278 ff.) but these are somewhat more fussily done and lack the piercing look of this eagle. The only eagle heads that can compare with this one in power were those engraved over a century later by the artist Da... and his followers at Olympia.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-1984 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.57g). Female head to right, her hair bound up with criss-crossing ribbons / Panathenaic amphora with pointed lid; to left, palm branch; all within linear frame. Apparently unpublished and unique. aEF.

This piece is apparently completely unknown and unrecorded by Bodenstedt. The reverse bears a large amphora with a lid: its shape is that of a ‘Panathenaic’, so-called from its use to store the olive oil given to winners at the Panathenaic Games in Athens. So, we must be looking at a prize amphora, a conclusion that is confirmed by the palm of victory that stands nearby. This means that the person depicted on the obverse of this coin must be Nike, goddess of victory. The rather sober hairstyle is also found on figures of Nike from Terina, Olympia, Kyzikos, Lampsakos and elsewhere. The very specific nature of the types on this coin implies that it was struck to commemorate the victory of someone.

The earliest coins of Alexandria are bronze issues struck about 300 BC imitating Hamaxitus (Apollo Smitheus) and Hamandria (Apollo/horse feeding). The earliest silver attributable to Alexandria are tetradrachms ca 280-275 in the name of Alexander, which on grounds of style belong to the years after the death of Lysimachus (Price 1588-1590). During the Second Syrian War (260-253) Antiochus II produced an issue of tetradrachms (SNG Spaer 374-376). Another two issues in the name of Alexander followed ca 230 (Price 1591), and again in 189-180 (Price 1592-1598). At some point during the 3rd century BC, an extensive bronze issue was produced (BMC 7-21), to which this previously unknown silver stater belongs, based on the local Persian silver weight standard, obviously intended for local use.

Samos (BC 600-570) EL Stater1916 viewsca 600-570 BC. EL Stater (17.22g). Uncertain design against a background of heavy filling ornament / Two parallel oblong incuse punches with irregular markings. VF. Ex Leu 77 (5/2000), lot 310.

The types of the early electrum of Samos are varied. The Samians had a unique style of coinage, with the central type placed against an amorphic patterned background. Various decriptions have been offered for the types-eagles, flowers, panthers, thunderbolts, etc. This cataloguer sees a flowering plant with two leaves, and a panther facing left below. The use of background ornament somewhat resembles the geometric patterns used as filling ornament on Corinthian pottery.

For the better part of 4th century BC, Lampsakos issued gold staters with forepart of Pegasus with a variety of obverse types. Few Greek cities were issuing gold at this time, and that Lampsakos was able to start such a project and maintain it for five or six decades, speaks volumes of its wealth and importance. Lampsakos had issued an important group of electrum staters in earlier times. Its gold staters apparently enjoyed wide distribution. Baldwin documented 41 issues of Lampsakene staters in her 1924 study, which is still the standard work. Of these, 8 bore figural types and 32 bore portraits, revealing a preference for the latter category. The chief difficulty Baldwin encountered in ordering the series was the surprising lack of die links between issues; in fact only once was a reverse die carried over from one issue to another, making a global die study impossible. For die studies within each issue, she located 5 examples of Hermes staters that were struck with 5 obverse and 4 reverse dies.
