The tuna was the sole type on the earliest electrum coinage of Cyzicus, but the relationship between type variety and denomination was inconsistent. In some series a whole tuna indicated a stater and just part of the fish indicated a smaller denomination, but our coin is a stater and shows just the head and the tail of a tuna. Unique, unpublished and very interesting type. Very fine. The sanctuary of Asclepius in Aegeae was certainly not as famous as the ones in Epidaurus, Kos or Pergamum, but still well known. The rather unusual use of base silver for these rare autonomous issues (dated 262 and 263 of the local era = AD 215/216 ans 216-217) as well as their types refer to an illness of Caracalla and of his attempt of being healed by visiting sanctuaries of Asclepius such as Pergamum and probably Aegeae. Until recently, the coins of Larisa Troas were believed to be from Larisa Phrikonis in Aiolis. Silver coins from this city are extremely rare, with only four published specimens, all of which are diobols (Winterthur 2767; Traite' II 2064; Imhoof-Blumer, "Antike Griechishe Muenzen," SNR 19 (1913), 87; and Wroth, "Greek Coins acquired by the British Museum in 1901," NumChron 1902, 26). Julius Caesar was the probably the founder of a colony at Lampsacus for veterans; maybe a twin foundation with Parium. The colony seems to have disappeared after its occupation by Sextus Pompey. Types made during this short period are traditional Republican. M. Turius was probably a legate of one of the Caesarian proconsuls of Asia. Very rare. Ex Gorny & Mosch 203 (3/2012), lot 197 (Naxos). In previous sales, this issue has been attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with same types, all of these cities’ bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. The identity of the female on rev is uncertain in references; Franke & Nolle describe her as Leto, mother of Apollo and Artemis; BMC simple calls her a goddess. Neither describe Pegasus being held by Zeus, and this may be the clue to her identity and the relevance of the scene. Pegasus, born of Medusa and tamed by Bellerophon, later throws off his mortal master and ascends to heaven, where he becomes the horse of Zeus and symbol of immortality, associated with the apotheosis of semi-divine mortals. The veiled female figure may be Faustina herself, presenting to Zeus her twin children, Aelius Aurelius and Aurelius Antoninus, who died shortly after their birth in 149. This coin proves that Geta joined his father and elder brother in the rather prolific coinage issues of Sinope’s civic years 252 and 253. The reverse type is something of a mystery. The bound captive is wearing a crested Phrygian style helmet and must represent an eastern foe. Yet Severus’ Persian campaigns had wrapped up around AD 199, and the last coinage issues commemorating the wars appeared around 202-203. There followed several years of relative peace, only broken in 208 by the plans to expand the conquest of Britain. There seems to be no event that can be tied to this militant type. Carried to Olympus either by an eagle, or Zeus himself in aquiline form, Ganymede served as the god’s cupbearer in place of Hebe, as well as his eromenos. This arrangement angered Hera to such a degree that she would abandon the Trojans in their war against the Greeks. To recompense Tros for the loss of his son, Zeus provided him with a pair of horses so swift, they could cross over water, and which were the ancestors of the horses for which the Trojans were renowned.
