Uncertain (BC 510) Drachm2394 viewsca 510 BC. AR Drachm (3.95g). Head of Gorgon facing / Incuse square divided into four compartments, three containing a pellet and one a crescent. Extremely rare. Nicely toned. Very fine.

Uncertain (BC 600-550) EL Hekte2226 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Hekte (2.73g), probably on the Phokaian weight standard. Scorpion / Irregular incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unknown. Some minor marks, otherwise EF. Ex Gorny & Mosch 190 (10/2010), 245.

This is an extraordinary piece, quite clearly on the Phokaian standard (as is the piece in the Leu sale - there are lighter electrum pieces with scorpions, as Weidauer 170, but they seem to be on the Milesian standard). The possibility that this piece may have been produced in Thrace or Macedon, given the well known bee that is found on uncertain silver coins from that area (CNG Auction 88, 75) is not unlikely, especially given the rather rough incuse square. There is also a very similar scorpion on some slightly later silver coins that are now also attributed to northern Greece since some have been found there (as SNG Copenhagen 377 and SNG con Aulock 6664 - both published as being from Asia Minor).

Uncertain (BC 425-375) Diobol B2892 viewslate 5th-early 4th century BC. AR Diobol (1.18g, 11mm, 6h). Forepart of boar right; monogram below / Forepart of lion right, bunch of grapes below. Good VF, slightly rough surfaces. Unpublished in the standard references.
85000477.jpg
Uncertain (BC 480-420) Obol822 views5th century BC. AR Obol (7mm, 0.68g). Elements of Chimaera: foreparts of lion, stag, and dragon(?), joined together at center and radiating outward / Facing gorgoneion within incuse square. Unpublished. VF, toned, some porosity. Possibly unique.

This coin appears to be the obol denomination for a series featuring the Chimaera on the obverse and a gorgoneion in incuse on the reverse, for which drachms and hemidrachms are known.

Uncertain (BC 200-100) Drachm?754 views2nd century BC. AR Drachm(?) (2.04g, 14mm, 12h). Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Eagle, with spread wings, standing right on thunderbolt; T to right. VF, find patina, some porosity.

The types on this issue are fairly common in the regions of southwest Asia Minor, Caria, Phrygia, and Lycia. The combination of these two types on a single issue, however, is unknown. At the same time, only one city, Kibyra in Phrygia, used both of these types on its coinage (cf. SNG von Aulock 3719 and 3720). Attribution to that city, though, is doubtful as all of its known issues bear the city ethnic.

Uncertain (BC 425-375) AV516 views4th century BC. AV (17mm, 3.44g, 5h). Forepart of boar right / Forepart of lion right. Near EF, traces of deposits in devices, a couple of minor field marks. Unique.

This puzzling coin is clearly in the same series as a small group of silver fractions of identical types and style that have trickled onto the market over the past five years with weights averaging 1.12g. Although the types suggest an origin in Asia Minor (e.g. Kyzikos), anecdotal information suggests an area further east in the region of Baktria. The weight is also mysterious - it does not seem to bear any clear relationship to the weight standards prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean, but is almost exactly three times the weight of the silver fractions, suggesting that the coins may have been intended to circulate locally in a closed exchange area rather than as part of the international financial system. The unusual weight on an apparent local standard supports the suggestion that this issue should be attributed to some region in central Asia remote from western commerce.

image00581.jpg
Uncertain (BC 350-300) AE - Memnon461 viewsca 360-340 BC. AE (0.64g). Head of Helios with nimbus right / Rosebud, M-E. Dark green patina, VF. Rare. R. Mueller coll.; ex Popken coll.; Aufhauser Auc. 10 (München, 1993), lot 203; Kuenker Auc. 133 (Osnabrück, 2007), lot 7613.

Ashton, in his study, suggests a localization in the vicinity of the Dardanelles and links this issue to the two Rhodian brothers Memnon and Mentor, who served ca 360-330 as satrap and commander of mercenaries in the service of Persian kings.
2431LG.jpg
Uncertain (BC 440-380) Hemiobol448 viewslate 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (0.24g, 7mm). Corinthian helmet / Amphora within dotted square (no ethnic). VF. Unpublished denomination with this reverse. Very rare.
131078.jpg
Uncertain (BC 425-375) Diobol A445 views425-375 BC. AR 1/12 Stater (6mm, 1.15g, 8h). Forepart of boar right; scorpion to left / Lion's head right; below, scorpion right. Good VF.
142045.jpg
Uncertain (BC 450-400) turtle - Hemiobol439 viewsca 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.26g). Bee alighting to right / Turtle in incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, light porosity.

The bee would seem to point to an attribution to Ephesos, but there is really nothing like it in that series. Silver fractions with turtles have been attributed to various locations from Lesbos to Lycia, and provide no help in identifying this unrecorded type.
33401525B15D.jpg
Uncertain (BC 440-380) Hemiobol429 views5th century BC. AR Hemiobol or Tetartemorion (6mm, 0.17g, 2h). Helmet left / Amphora within linear square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, toned. Very rare.

Varieties of this type have appeared at auction recently, and have been tentatively attributed to Neandria in Troas, where an early fraction featured a helmet on the obverse. While an attribution to a mint in that region is reasonable, Neandria is probably not correct, as its early fractions consistently feature a ram or barley grain on the reverse, which were emblematic of the city. At the same time, the nearby city of Larissa consistently featured an amphora on the reverse of nearly all of its coinage, which would make it a more likely candidate.

Uncertain (BC 500-450) Diobol?387 views5th century BC. AR Diobol(?) (9.5mm, 1.07g). Archaic bearded male head left / Quadripartite square. Unpublished in the standard references. Near EF, toned.
8604306_15B15D.jpg
Uncertain (BC 500-450) cow - Hemistater?384 views5th century BC. AR (6.05g). Cow standing left, head reverted, calf suckling right / Incuse head of African man left. Gemini sale 4, 2008, 195 (these dies). Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second known. Lightly toned, EF.

A mint in Caria or Lycia in the 5th century BC has been suggested, and its weight of 6.05 grams suggests it was intended as a half-stater of the Aeginetan or Samian standard. The most likely influence might have been the electrum sixths of Phocaea attributed by Bodenstedt (Ph24 and Ph54) to before 522 BC and to the period 477-388 BC. This might be especially relevant since the Phocaean sister-coinage of Mytilene of ca 521-455 BC uses for its reverses the heads of animals and the head of Heracles, all of which are rendered incuse.

Uncertain (BC 440-390) Star - Hemiobol 1376 viewsca 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (0.4g, 6mm). Head right, with short hair, wearing Corinthian helmet / Star of four rays, four pellets between rays, all within incuse square. Extremely rare, gVF.
388228.jpg
Uncertain (BC 440-390) Star - Hemiobol 2376 views5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.40g). Head right, with short hair, wearing Corinthian helmet / Star of eight long rays in incuse square. VF, minor porosity. Extremely rare.

In the Gorny sale, the head on the obverse is identified as Athena, but the clearly short hair makes such a determination unlikely. Nevertheless, the style and fabric of this coin suggests a mint in northwest Asia Minor, perhaps Ionia.

Uncertain (BC 450-400) Dynast 3 - Tetartemorion374 viewsearly-mid 5th century BC. AR Tetartemorion (0.19g, 5mm, 6h). Head of eagle right / Wreath(?) in incuse square. Near EF, toned, light porosity. Extremely rare.1 comments

Since variants with EY and NI exist (instead of ME), Ashton suggests a localization in the vicinity of the Dardanelles and links this issue to the two Rhodian brothers Memnon and Mentor.

94000648.jpg
Uncertain (BC 350-300) Drachm - Memnon329 viewsca 360-340 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 3.48g, 6h). Pseudo-Rhodian type. Head of Helios left within solar disk / Rose with bud to each side; M-E flanking. VF, dark find patina. Rare.

While some of these “solar disk” drachms are attributable to Rhodes, most of the issues have long been recognized as being psudo-Rhodian issues from mints in Caria. The ME issues had originally been assigned to Megiste, but R. Ashton convincingly argues against this speculative attribution (cf. R. Ashton, “The Coinage of Nisyros” in Travaux Le Rider, p. 16, n. 4).
142046.jpg
Uncertain (BC 450-400) turtle - Hemiobol320 viewsca 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.22g). Bee alighting to right / Turtle in incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, light porosity.

This type is missing from the the major published collections but appears on the market from time to time. Changes in style indicate they must have been struck over a considerable time. This earlier issue appears less frequently than the later style coins.
191.jpg
Uncertain (BC 350-300) Drachm - Memnon311 viewsLampsakos(?). Memnon of Rhodes, mid 4th century BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 3.18g, 11h). PseudoRhodian type.
