Pordosilene (AD 222-235) AE 38 - Severus Alexander986 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE38 - Medallion (30.87g, 6h). Aurelius Coscelius, magistrate. AVT K M AVP CEV ALEXANDPOC, laureate head right / EPI CTP AVP KWCKELI OV TAM POPOCELHN, EITWN across field, Tyche standing left, modius on head, holding patera in right hand, cornucopiae in left. Magistrate not recorded in Münsterberg. VF, matte dark green patina, surfaces slightly rough. A unique and apparently unpublished medallic bronze. Drewry Coll.; ex Burstein Coll., Peus 366 (10/2000), lot 606.

The only bronze of Severus Alexander for Pordoselene, and the only medallic sized coin for the island. The edge of the coin has been lightly tapped to create a raised rim; sestertii with this edge effect are sometimes referred to as "proto-contorniates." This coin was probably a presentation piece. mounted in a phalera for display. In the Peus catalogue it is described as lead, but in actuality is a poor quality bronze alloy.
