Kaisareia (AD 193-194) Drachm - Pescennius Niger613 viewsPescennius Niger, 193-194 AD. AR Denarius - Drachm (2.46g, 18mm, 12h). Caesarea mint. IMP CAES C PESC NIGER IVST AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ΔHMAPXI EΞ O VΠATOC, modius with grain ears. Fine, toned, porous, chipped at 12 o’clock from an attempted piercing. Very rare and important issue.

When Pescennius was proclaimed emperor by his troops in AD 193, he knew his reign as emperor would not be peaceful. He quickly set out to issue huge sums of denarii in his name to pay his troops and to win the loyalty of others. To do this, like so many before him, Pescennius reduced the fineness of his denarii to a point that they were equivalent to the Caesarean drachm. This coin provides a direct link to these events, combining a denarius obverse die and a drachm reverse die. This coin also presents clear evidence that both Antioch and Caesarea struck coins for Pescennius.

Argaeus. Very rare; an intriguing coin with an idealized portrait of Elagabalus and a golden brown patina with green highlights. Nearly EF. European coll.

It has been suggested that this rare and heavy coin formed part of a celebratory issue (with Julia Maesa and Severus Alexander) struck in honor of Alexander’s appointment as Caesar.

Out of 43 tridrachms of Gordian III’s fourth year surveyed by Bland, 33 carried the Tyche countermark, always on the reverse. They seem to be linked to a Helios countermark applied to his bronze coinage, normally found in this case on the obverse. The variation in silver content and weight of Caesarean silver issues is quite astounding. Bland’s study of 105 silver coins of Gordian III have the following weight ranges: 6.72-11.17g for tridrachms, 4.02-6.20g for didrachms, and 2.08-4.13g for drachms. The fineness of the coins varies from 30% to 63%.
