This is the second known example of an Anakreon didrachm, the first being a coin that turned up last year with the magistrate's name Aristonax. The magistrate Prokleides also appears on a drachm that shares its obverse die with an Aristonax drachm (see CNG Auction 55, lot 519). Anakreon (fl. late 6th Century BC) was a lyric poet who was a native of Teos. This issue marks his first appearance on a coin, and in fact this is probably the first appearance of any poet on a coin. Anakreon continued to appear on coins from Teos down through Roman times.

Teos (BC 530-500) Hemidrachm74 viewsca 510 BC. AR Hemidrachm (3.50g). Protome of a winged griffin right, forelegs extended with talons outstretched / Irregular incuse square. Extremely rare. Toned, EF.

From the collections of H.S. von Aulock and R. Jameson. This is a most enigmatic coin, possibly even unpublished. While it was attributed to Teos in von Aulock, Jameson pointed out that griffin protomes were not used there (but cf. coin #557); Balcer excluded it from his corpus (without comment). It could have been minted in Phokaia, as Babelon pointed out in his commentary on a very similar drachm (Traite'), especially since griffin protomes were used on later issues at Phokaia.
