The town had a Plutonium, and in later times a festival called the Theogamia celebrated the abduction itself." (W. E. Metcalf, a. O., p. 50).

When the Pergamene king Attalos II died in 134 BC, he bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans. Because the Romans were slow in securing their claim, Aristonikos, son of the earlier Pergamene king Eumenes II, filled the power vacuum, claiming the throne and taking the dynastic name Eumenes. Although unable to capture Pergamon, his revolt lasted four years, until he was defeated and captured by the Romans under the consul M. Perperna. After his surrender, he was paraded through Rome and executed.

Apollonis (AD 139-161) AE 29 - Marcus Aurelius138 viewsMarcus Aurelius (as Caesar?), 139-161 AD. AE29 (17.20g), Aeschrion and Hermokrates, magistrates. AV KAI M AVPHΛIOC ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟC, bare-headed and draped bust right / ΑΠΟΛΩΝΙΔΕΩΝ across field, ΑΠ ΕPΜΟΚPΑΤΟC ΑΙCXPΙΩΝΟC, Zeus standing left, holding eagle and sceptre. Good VF, dark brown patina. Unpublished in the major references.

The magistrate Hermokrates is known for Apollonis through several coins of Lucius Verus. The portrait and titles suggest a date late in Aurelius' service as Caesar or immediately after he succeeded Antoninus Pius in 161 AD. The second magistrate, Aeschrion, is known from one other coin, also of Lucius Verus, from Apollonia, which has been identified as Apollonia Salbace in Caria, Mionnet III pg. 332, 173). It is tempting to see them as the same person. But Apollonis in Lydia and Apollonia Salbace are some distance apart, and it is difficult to see the connection. However, there are a number of other Apollonias in Asia Minor, and one of them, Apollonia on the Caicus in Mysia, is only some 20 miles from Apollonis. Perhaps the two close neighbors shared more than a similarity in names, and there was a civic connection.

Prymnessos (AD 240-260) AE 2477 viewsImperial Times, mid-3rd century AD. AE24 (7.30g, 7h). Draped bust of King Midas right, wearing Phrygian cap / Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and sceptre. Good VF, black-green patina with lighter green overtones, small hairline flan crack. A rare mythological type. Ex Drewry Coll.

Midas, the mytho-historical king of Phrygia and Lydia, was granted the so-called "Golden Touch" by Dionysus because the king wished for unending wealth as a reward for his guest-friendship to Silenus. Everything Midas touched turned to gold, including food. Starving and pleading for relief, the king was instructed to bathe in the waters of the river Pactolus. The water removed Midas’ “gift” and turned the sand of the river-bed into grains of gold. It was the naturally-occuring ore of the Pactolus that became the source of the metal used in the first archaic electrum coinages of Asia Minor.

Phokaia (BC 380-360) EL 1/6 Stater 50 viewsca 380-360 BC. EL 1/6 Stater - Hekte (2.54g). Bearded head facing left, wearing Persian headdress; behind, seal swimming / Four-part incuse square. Of exceptional quality and struck in high relief. Choice EF.

Bodenstedt interpreted the head as a portrait of the Persian satrap Tissaphernes. While Tissaphernes was a bad candidate - he was executed in 395 BC (while the coin was issued some decades later) - it is not yet clear whether the head is meant to be a portrait altogether. J.H. Kroll called the 'satrapal portraits' "generic rather than individualized representations" (The Emergence of Ruler Portrait, in: Schultz/von den Hoff (eds), Early Hellenistic Portraiture (Cambridge 2007), p. 114), and C. Harrison has convincingly shown that many of the so-called 'satrapal portraits' are meant to represent the heroized Persians who raised Darius I to the Persian throne (Numismatic Problems in the Achaemenid West, in: Gorman/Robinson (eds), Oikistes. Studies Offered in Honor of A.J. Graham (Leiden 2002), pp. 301-319). Harrison's theory does not apply in this case, since the head gear does not have that famous knot at the forehead. So it may well be that one of the satraps of the 370s and 360s is intended, perhaps Autophradates, then satrap of Lydia and the fiercest opponent of the satrap of Paphlagonia Datames during the satraps' revolt 368-358 BC.
