Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / The philosopher Heraclitus standing left, raising right hand and holding torch in left. Good Fine, brown and tan patina, light roughness. Heraclitus “the Obscure” is one of the earliest Greek philosophers whose writings have come down to us reasonably complete. Born in Ephesos in the 6th century BC, he retired to the countryside after the aristocratic party he supported was ejected from power, but nonetheless became a revered figure in the city’s history. Heraclitus held that fire was the basic building block of existence, hence he is depicted holding a torch. ”This world-order, the same of all, no god nor man did create, but it ever was and is and will be: everliving fire, kindling in measures and being quenched in measures." Lysimachos made himself master of Ephesos in 295 and shortly thereafter changed the city's name to Arsinoeia in honor of his wife, the daughter of Ptolemy I. After the death of Lysimachos in 280, Arsinoe married her half brother Ptolemy Ceraunus and finally her full brother Ptolemy II. She became the first Ptolemaic ruler to enter the Egyptian temples as "temple-sharing goddess" and was revered by the later Ptolemies.

(BC 120-63) Mithradates VI - AV Stater844 viewsMithradates VI, 120-63 BC. AV Stater (8.46g). Pergamon mint. Dated year 4 of Pergamene Era (86/85 BC); struck during the First Mithradatic War. Diademed head right, hair tousled and flowing freely / Stag grazing left; pellet below, star and crescent to left, D (date) to right, monogram in exergue; all within Dionysiac wreath of ivy and fruit. Good VF, minor scrape in reverse field. Very rare.
Mithradates' career driven by megalomaniacal ambitions leading to murderous assaults upon family and followers and disastrous foreign adventures against superior forces. His idealized portraiture attempts to mimic the gods with its bold staring gaze and unruly, free-flowing hair. The wreath of ivy on the reverse reinforces Mithradates' link with the gods as well as making a connection with the cistaphoric coinage that formerly circulated in the Asian territory he conquered in his first war with Rome in 88 BC, which witnessed the horrific massacre of the Roman citizens of Asia Minor. The stag probably represents the civic center of Ephesos and the mintmark is of Pergamon, all part of the new Pontic kingdom, symbolized by the star and crescent.

The earliest Roman cistophoric tetradrachm. T.R.S. Broughton, in The Magistrates of the Roman Republic 3. Supplement (1986), identified this praetor as C. Atinius Labeo, who is best known for attempting to have the censor (and hero of the Fourth Macedonian War) Q. Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus thrown off the Tarpeian Rock for expelling him from the Senate (see Livy, Per. LIX.10).

Memnon (BC 340-334) Siglos155 viewsMemnon of Rhodes, Satrap in Ionia, ca 340-334 BC. Ephesos? AR Siglos (5.46g, 3h). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, holding dagger and bow / Incuse relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos(?). Good VF, trace of encrustation on reverse. Extremely rare.
The reverse depicts what Johnston interprets as a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos (the earliest Greek map and first physical relief map known) - the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Caister and Maeander, and three mountain ridges (Madranbaba Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). Johnston follows Six in suggesting that the coins were probably struck under the Persian general Memnon at Ephesos, circa 336-334 BC, in order to pay his army after he had captured the city, but before his defeat by Alexander at the Battle of Granicus in 334. However, this theory is still debated and doubted by some scholars, most recently by Leo Mildenberg.
